I'm new to coin grading so wonder if anyone could provide a range on this coin. I don't think the pictures are great. I have tried to show what it looks like on the first picture and then shined a light on it to highlight the detail on the second and third pictures. Thanks for your help.

May have been cleaned a while back, but I do like the toning. Very nice.

Cleaned and re-toned. Still a nice looking coin

If you are interested, I think this is Obverse 2 (the way the I and T of BRITT tilt forwards identifies this) and Reverse D (the way the exergue line bends up at the left end along with the LCW in the ground at the same spot). This makes it Freeman 10 - not particularly scarce, but a decent example.

Grade would be UK Fine, and polished at some point in the past.

Many thanks for the information. I have a few to go through so this really helps me with what to look for.

Looking at the Britannia's fingers holding the trident makes me think its aVF or maybe even better or am I too positive?

Much too positive. You're way off. As you'll see consensus here is grade Fine but cleaned.

"Well, I'm a positive person, what can I say. :)" Nothing wrong with that. Always best to be realistic though when assessing coins as overgrading can lead to a false idea of what a collection may be worth and possible future disappointment.

For comparison, here's an 1860 penny accurately graded Fine by London Coin Auctions.

I think the grading is too stingy! I think its cleaned and that London operation had another coin in another thread we thought was graded too hard.
The OP's coin is better than that one, I would say its gFine verging on VF, Molydeii is right.
