Not my coin, but one I'm considering. I'd like to hear all of your thoughts.

The speckled toning is hiding some obverse marks, I'd say MS-64. I'm not a fan of the measles look.

I've seen PCGS MS66 Barber quarters with more nicks and scuffs than this one, I think I'll go with MS66 could see a + on it from them too depending on the holder style, I think they tightened up a bit on newer secure gold shield holders. The graduated blue to lighter blue holders seemed to get the + grades even more than the solid light blue and OGH. Like Zurie, I'm also not a fan of the molted looks, reminds me of the exploded peach can juice look, found in the Redfield Peace dollar hoard.

I'll say MS65 on this one but I'm also not a fan of the toning. The left obverse looks like a finger print to me. I really hate toned finger prints...

I'll go with MS-65 or better, but I don't care for it either.

A speckled hen! I think it surely makes MS65 but the obverse speckling is too overpowering for me.

MS66 reverse, MS64+ obverse.
Net MS65.

I am at MS63 as there are some small scratches on neck, field and cheek. The coin is original, but in the field behind the ear, there may be finger print toning. The glamor photo by Ture View appears not to help this coin.

you know how I feel about grading from trueview the obverse has a number of scratches under those measles as previously noted. cheek, neck, jaw, left field, right field. do not like the toning on this one at all. MS64 for the obverse scratches and eye appeal

Lots of hits to that obverse, reverse looks very nice which IMO might bring it to 64...But I'll go with MS-63+

Would like to give it a 65 but have to agree with Zurie ... the speckles do try to hide some obverse marks. Have to also agree with the MS64.

Mismatched die states, with a weak reverse. To get a better feel for the coin, I tinkered with the pictures by reducing lighting, eliminating color completely, and sharpening contrast.
The obverse has multiple contact marks on the cheek, chin, and neck, with one deep NW-SE gouge between the third right star and the lips. IMHO, the obverse is capped at MS-63. Despite the weak strike, the reverse is better. There is a hit on the vertical bars of the shield, another on the point of the shield, rim scuffs at 1:00, and a knock on the mint mark. IMHO, the reverse makes MS-65. The blended grade would be MS-64, before eye appeal adjustment. The surface spotting looks like an old dipping that was followed by improper handling. I agree with the upthread comments about toning measles and the fingerprint.* I see at least -0.5 points for eye appeal, with a net grade of MS-63+.
*My wife and I have two police detective friends who would salivate over a fingerprint like that!

Time is up!
PCGS gave this an MS66, which I felt was wayyy to high.
Though I'll be controversial, I really quite like the toning. I can see why people wouldn't like it, but I think it looks quite nice.

Figured as much, after looking at quite a few MS66 Barber quarters in PCGS holders I was convinced these are a crap shoot in grading with them. So many looked MS63/64 and others looked every bit of 66 or even better. Just no consistency at all in the series. I feel it is over graded by at least 1.5 points. Curious what the holder generation was Grape do you know or remember?
