Not my coin. I saw this up for sale a few days ago and would like to see if you all are in agreement with me on this one.

Not a fan. AU something..... AU58?
Guessing it's probably over or undergraded.

I'd venture AU-53 if straight graded. The reverse gouges look severe enough however to possibly detail the coin. It's also possible NGC determined the coin has been cleaned.
Still lots of appeal for a scarce and high-grade early dime.

The reverse looks original and mint state to me. Nice clashes at the date, and the weakness on the obverse may be due to die wear. Those gouges on the reverse might get a pass. I'd say MS-62.

I've seen the coin's grade already so I won't spoil it for the rest of you, I think the scratches on the reverse are a deal breaker for the slab it's in. You won't believe it, nobody's guess is even close, LOL. Nice one Grape! But the coin may look different in hand, the seller does know his stuff TBF.

AU 58 The toning is attractive, but I would pass as to get the same natural toning progression with color on both sides is unlikely, and I have lost all confidence in NGC when it comes to grading toners.

Quote: I've seen the coin's grade already so I won't spoil it for the rest of you...Nice one Grape! I do try to post interesting or challenging coins to grade, it's a fun little thing to see if people are more in line with me in terms of grading or more in line with the TPGs, or if they're in the middle.

well...definitely a weak strike. looks like there is luster under the surfaces. i'd be interesting to see if they graded it straight with that scratch. these early pieces can be tough. I'm in at MS62 I'm thinking Grape had it at AU58
