I picked this up in a tray of "foreign" coins from an auction. Too bad its so toasted, but if it weren't, it probably wouldn't have been on that tray. (There was also a Liberty Cap, but its even more toasted).

It is 26.7 mm and weighs 12.7 grams. The edge is smooth, so I assume its a Vine and Bars Edge.

I'm looking for opinions on whether or not to get it graded. I suspect it would rate PO01 and possibly details due to scratches or environmental damage.

That definitely has to be graded.

Send it in. It will be worth big $ when it comes back. I have no reason to doubt it is genuine in this grade. Please post when you get the results.

Great find! Just for reference, I took a quick glance on the Heritage archive, and a couple years ago there was a ANACS Net P01 vine and bars edge large cent that looked a whole lot worse than this one (it was barely recognizable as to type, and on top of severe corrosion it was badly damaged) and it went for over $400.

That is a true American treasure. Only 955 Flowing Hair 1793 Wreath Cents have been certified by PCGS, if I'm noting correctly. Regardless of condition, this is amazing!

Now, too bad it's not a strawberry leaf variety!

Super Duper find! WOW this is what dreams are made from. Not to be an echo chamber but - Send it in - Send it in and keep us updated when it comes back, I too think PO1 or FR02 these days this is a $500+ coin in this condition, depending on whether or not any Sheldon variety could be ascertained, it could be even more $$$ for a really rare one (not that all 1793 cents aren't already excessively rare today).

Thanks for the input everybody. I'll be sending it in and will report back about the grade. I may attempt to get the variety attributed, but not sure there is enough detail for that. From what I can tell, it would probably be a S8 or S9, just based on the shape of the flower on the obverse.

It looks like an S-9. The S-8 reverse letters look like they are positioned differently. Definitely keep us updated!
