This is the last coin of the three broadstruck lot I picked up recently. Interesting that on the reverse, the bottom bar of "E" on "ONE" got smeared and now looks like ONF.

Very nice dime.

What causes these broadstruck coins? are they true errors, or a 'die event?

@coinhi, that is a super pick-up for you! Can you please post the diameter of this coin? Thx.

It's a true error. The retaining collar didn't deploy correctly, so the planchet was struck with no device to limit the spread of the metal or add the reeding to the coin.

Ah ok thanks. Earlier I had asked that question, then did some research and found a partial answer, then edited to remove the question I thought I had answered myself (partially) But it did not explain the collar deployment part.

So I put my question back in my original post.. for continuity purposes.

Now I have a complete answer.. Thanks again yokozuna and Spence

What adds the reeds on the edges of reeded coins? The collar. When the coin is struck without the collar, the shape will not be controlled to be exactly round, and the reeds or plain edges will not be formed. The collar controls the outside edges of the coins. Without it, they will be distorted.

Thanks CCF!!

The extra definition to the center designs of these errors make for great photos.

I don't have a way to measure these Spence. I did post a side by side with a nickel on that last photo though.
