About a year ago picked up a partial merc book...all in circ condition for melt.
Got the bug to start filling holes. Was making a list based on what was needed from the old Whitman book and looking at PCGS price guide. The price guide showed a 42/1-D but the book dosen't have a hole for it...so I popped out the 42-D and found this.
Is this the real deal? Of course it's probably a details coin because of the wear and hits...but I think this might be it?
Let me know what you Merc guys think.
Thanks!
smat

There are two varieties of the 42 over 41 and unfortunately
yours is neither one.

It looks like it could possibly be the one that nss-52 posted, but it's difficult to tell for sure from this pic and the overall condition.

better pics of the date (lighting) needed to tell for certain. Its too easy to "see" parts of the pic nss-52 posted in the OP's pic not knowing if its really there or not (except for the bump under the 2.

Also, I put a pic of this side by side with a 42/41. Are the differences in fonts in IGWT, shape of chin (yours appears to point downward too much), eye, etc. just anomalies of your initial picture?

This coin is one known to be faked often.

Better pics would help tremendously to know for sure.

With that new pic, I am on the fence leaning towards yes. Are you able to match die markers?

The well-known over date is a Philadelphia mint coin.
The lesser-known over date is a Denver mint coin.
I don't know if (think) it would be valid to compare the obverses of both types to determine authenticity.

Boy oh boy John...I have a hard enough time posting pics (that's why I don't do it too much)
Here is IGWT...
Looks like the top left of the W...but it took a hit lower left.
The U seems to match and looks like the dots do as well...other than that...lots of circ on her.
I'll include the MM which is supose to be an RPM...looks worn but maybe a slight notch...acetone didn't remove any of the darkness.

You might want to take it to a coin shop like Redford Jewelry and Coin 734-667-1204 or any shop near you. In hand examination is a lot easier then going by photos.NOTE: not recommending this particular place, found it by googling.

You are totally correct! I am not sure how in the world I missed this. Here I am looking for minute likenesses in details and don't even see I have the wrong coin! Sorry about that

The 1942-D 2/1 has an RPM, as well. I don't have photos of mine, and my coin is in the bank vault. Just going from my recollection, it looks like your mm isn't in the right position and doesn't show the doubling. I could be wrong here, but that's the best I can do without my coin in hand.

This is correct for the over date.
Now send it into TPG for the variety designation.

Yes it is but due to coins condition, wouldn't be worth a lot of money. Yet might be worth sending to a TPG service.
