Why do you think this is misplaced?

The D is supposed to be between the 9 and the 8.

The D was hand punched into the die.
It can be anywhere below the date and to the right of the jacket.

Up until about 1989 mint marks were hand punched into the die. As a result, their location could vary, sometimes significantly, from one die to another.

Although unusual looking, the cent is within mint tolerances.

Tail end of the hand-punched era; lots of leeway for mintmark position.

They can see anywhere on the design east of the bust and below the date. That is the normal areas. So yours falls in the normal area:
Sometimes they are angled:

Or close to the date:

When they are on the date, that is out of the target area:

When you see two or more punch locations on the die, then they are RPMs

So the mintmark locations mentioned on the pre 1990 coins were had picked. Punched into the die:

Location was done with a steady hand.

And that about sums it up. Looks like a common '88 D.
