I am assuming that it got such a low grade because it is a proof, there was more detail present in the first place. No significant strike weakness.
I would have a really hard time spending $100k (if I had the money) on such a small, unattractive coin. Yikers!

Perhaps the obvious wear on the reverse is the reason for 35. Obverse grade appears to be much higher.
To my way of thinking, when a proof coin exhibits 35 wear, the values of proof and business strike values tend to merge. I suspect that this coin has seen at least some circulation, although because the wear is so biased to the reverse, it may have spent some time in a suspension bezel as jewelry.

My saving grace is that it's a proof. I don't collect proofs.
Also I don't collect gold coins except for my type set.

It's an extremely rare coin, with only 16 known, possibly all proofs. The price seems fair for what it is. It looks like this specimen last sold in 1979.
Owning it would be like owning an 1804 dollar, of which 15 exist. It's that rare.

With only 16 produced, an intending buyer would have to be highly motivated by the rarity, and ignore the wear on the reverse.

I've bought a rare coin from this outfit. They have great service and a reputation to uphold. I got the email offering this coin yesterday. There are other rarities you can buy that are rarer and less pricey than this. It is all in what the demand for the coin is. It is rather unattractive but it is in the list of 100 Greatest U.S. Coins for folks who are collecting that set.
