Hey, I've posted a couple Pennie's at this point just trying to learn the mechanics of the forum.
I am a silver collector and have never really dabbled in coin collecting but I am starting my collection. You could say I inherited a lot of coins:
Pennies: late 1800s - present
Nickels: scores of Buffalo nickels, War Nickels, to present
Dimes: mostly 90% including a lot of mercuries
Quarters: mostly 90% including a lot of standing liberties
Several Morgan dollars
Peace dollars
Kennedy half dollars
Eisenhower dollars
A lot of old Canadian coins
Ben franklins

I have no idea where to start to categorize all of these. What I have been doing is starting with, for instance, all the Kennedy half dollars and going through the years and googling to see what the defects are. I was doing that earlier today for the pennies and it can get super overwhelming.

Just didn't know if someone had a better approach to tackling this? Thank you!

Simply getting them sorted is huge start.

First, let's get on the same page regarding the difference between errors (off center, broadstrikes, clips, double strikes). These are one off abnormalities that come from the mass production minting process. Varieties are things like overdates, doubled dies, repunched mint marks, etc that are a part of the die and will be in every coin struck by that die. Then there are die events like die cracks, Cuds, die clashes that happen to a die as it's used and getting older and will appear on the coins struck after the event that are kinda in between - maybe they shouldn't be there sorta like an unintended variety but the mint chose to continue using the die so not really an error either.

Odds of finding errors aren't great. Maybe a clip or lamination here or there is most likely.

The more likely fun may be with a magnifying class searching for the varieties and die events.

If you inherited all the enumeration done, then you can build a nice collection. Congrats, lucky, happy for you.

I will start put by years first, suggest to have an catalog, basic one first.

After I will start to go to see varieties (mean design varieties) because on really word collecting is this.

Then I will start with some errors (learn what are errors and most important the minting process) or varieties like DD.

Try to have the most accurate definitions of what are errors and varieties. On the net You find 75% of the folks been erroneity (due to the marketing factors) but not focus on collecting.

This it is my suggestions, and it is up to you to choice your way. I am collector and I do not go be the time's waves or marketing.

And Welcome here where you can learn so much. On this forum or others on this site.

For Canadians coins, put by years and send me a summary and I will direct you to the bests ones.

Agree with John1--check out reputable, hype-free web resources such as error-ref.com and varirtyvista.com for starters.

Aside from researching what to look for, start off slow, and be willing to go through them a few times. For me, I spotted die chips easily and progressed into die cracks. I thought I had some doubled dies, but they were machine damage. There is a lot to absorb, so take it in steps. This way you will get stronger at 1 or 2 things at a time and eventually maybe we wont miss much.

Probably a new current Red Book would be helpful with a lot of basic questions:
New-To-Finding-Errors.where-To-Start
Others you could ask here. But the Book might help a lot more with your knowledge.
