There is a chunk of this cent missing on the reverse below the E of ONE. I know that this will be determined as PMD. I am just curious as to how damage to this extent could be so confined to the immediate area. The edges are fairly clean cut. There does appear to be a slight ridge of ploughing out which should indicate a pushing out of material. Yet when viewed from the rim shot, there is little to no distortion in the width of the rim and field plane appears flat and even. Imo, a hit of this magnitude would have surely affected the flatness of this cent. It is not bent or distorted. The interior of the anomaly appears rippled. Like a reverse welding bead.
It is the first time I have seen anything like this.
Diameter across is 19.06mm. Opposite 19.05.
Rim thickness across damage is 1.5 MM. Opposite side 1.5mm. Weight is 2.47 grams.
A head scratcher I might 2x2 an label as a "Reverse Cud".
What are your thoughts?

The plating over the zinc protects the zinc. When it is exposed to oxygen, then the zinc begins to rot/deteriorate. Eventually it will be a copper colored Hershey's kisses wrapper when the zinc is gone. Spender while it is still spendable.

Yes. Ruptured/compromised cooper plating exposes zinc core, which leads to zinc rot.

And I might add, the silvery residue in the divot is not exposed zinc. This first appeared as a blob of solder. Acetone soak for a day, 90% of blob removed. If it was all removed, the area underneath would have the same patina as the right side (dark area). The more I remove, the larger the area grows from right to left.

Is there any speculation as to how this might happen without distortion?

As stated, as zinc corrodes it just kind of crumbles. There is no real distortion to the copper plating except where it corrodes underneath and bubbles the surface up. With a break in the copper plating, the zinc will just continue to deteriorate.

The white crud is what zinc turns to when it is exposed to oxygen. Rot.
