As asked I'm posting all my inherited coins as separate threads for grading. Also, I'm not a coin collector, so it would be helpful if I could get a dollar amount estimate to go along with the grade.

The 1829 Capped Bust half dollar is very high grade at about AU58 with a beautiful strike and great luster. May be uncirculated. Is the black v-shaped mark on the coin or the plastic on the holder? The bust half is worth about $700 or more if uncirculated. Also very original and in demand by collectors.

Very close to uncirculated. Please clarify if the black marks are on the holder or the coin.

The mark is on the outside. I cropped it out, but there are markings on the cardboard too; it looks like the entire thing was kept in some sort of money clip.

I tried to push the coin to side a bit by pushing on the plastic next to the coin, and I fear that it might of left a mark on the coin as well but I couldn't get a clear enough view to know for sure.

What are those white stripes on the eagle ? It looks like there was some kind of impact and pieces of metal fell off.

I'm at AU58 on this one. for insurance purposes I would use $700

Ouch, if the black stripes are on the coin, that is a real big distraction. The OP says it is on the holder, so I will take their word for it. It does appear to continue past the coin on the plastic.

This high grade 1829 Capped Bust half dollar is the O-115 variety that has a rarity of R-1, 1000+ known examples and commonly found. The stars, hairline, wings, arrowheads, and talons are all strongly struck, making this variety a nice type coin for the series. This coin has nice rims, and a very original toning pattern. This one is AU-58, because of the slight darkness on the high points of Miss Liberty. That is minor rub, keeping this coin from being uncirculated. I put a value of $600 on this coin.

First,

I agree with the AU-58 grade and upthread comments. I wonder if the black mark could be the residue from an old rubber band?

AU58, would not be surprised at a MS62/63, hard to decipher wear vs slightly weak strike sometimes.

I'm going to be the oddball here and say MS-63. Needle sharp. Lots of luster. Great eye appeal. Zero distractions. I'm not sure where you all are seeing the rub. This coin never saw circulation.

Slirk, those lighter areas are the high points on the reverse and the tarnish is lighter in color there. This is not a problem. It is not damage and not distracting in my opinion. I've collected bust halves for 30 years and these areas often show flatness due to the metal not flowing up to the highest points of relief and/or making contact with the surfaces it has been laid on.
