Hey everyone,

I was checking for a variety for the 1972 (D) Kennedy half dollars, and found a nice bit of what I think is notable Die Deterioration. What I found neat about this coin was that the nose is practically detached from the face due to the wear. While not a variety, it's a fun find all the same.

Thanks!

@lun, yes for sure this obv die was used a bit. Often times we see this when mint officials have buffed out a previous die clash. Perhaps that is what happened here.

Soon in the next hour I will come with a clarification of this halve. This coin made me think of the 1966 FS-50- 103 from SMS set.

The was struck by an old and worn out die that was over polished to keep it in service longer than it should have. Also take note of the radial flow lines on the obverse - a sign that the die was stretching some.

Took me more time to do, here it is the result.

1972D JJF has 4 Observe Varieties Designs. I will put here the most common: RDO-01 and RDO-02 (I will name for moment like this, is not yet official but me I say like this) The third is Scarce and the fourth is Rare. At this moment I do not have here in home office.

I see in this coin a funny mixt of variety and push me to see more of the second variety for this year on Phil dies. I do not contest the fact it is a late stage Die re-polish (the traces of re-polish could be see) but not a coin damage by the circulation or manipulation to much. I see also some doubling which is characteristic for those Dies done in Phil for all Mint places in 1972. History: Was use one Galvano for all Mints, but different Masters Dies. Some with high relief, some lower (D). The Master Die was reworked according with the assay report 4 to 6 times, so this result in 4 to 6 varieties. Second is that at one point they use three strikes for the Master Die Hub, which result in doubling.

Please compare the photos and come with comments. Any one is welcome, I will analyze all the points of view. (I like technical and not hypothetical written)

Thanks for the info everyone, especially you Silviosi. I never would have imagined that there were so many different die varieties for the same year. So it's more than just the state of wear on the die, it's slightly different die designs all together. I saw doubling on the two and thought it was just Machine Doubling all together. Choosing to make alter each one is a great way for varieties to be born though

This is just a rescued die that had suffered Feeder Finger Damage. Almost removed the nose on this one. The middle image (RDO-01) Is the normal design. The lower image (RDO-02) is another FFD rescued die, that shows a lesser amount of die polishing. So the Feeder Finger Damage was less on that damaged die and was rescued also. RDO-002 is just an altered die post damage/rescued die. (Even the 'E' is showing that these two dies were over polished.
