This is one of those coins that is hard to come by, somewhat expensive, and rarely up for sale. So when I saw this one I figured I'd go for it as unlikely to see another at a decent price anytime soon. The coin has a substantial Cud on the obverse, which removed the date. But, the die fragment flipped over and was struck by the obverse die. This created a floating die clash, which includes the numbers 987 providing the date for the coin. Neat! And very cool looking for some monster eye-appeal even if the coin has a couple small spots going on. The coin has it's own page on Maddieclashes.com (not this exact coin of course) http://www.maddieclashes.com/fdc-1c-1987-01/1987 Lincoln Memorial cent mint error - CU-1C-1987-01, FDC-1C-1987-01

That is pretty cool @tb.
@sj28, first welcome to CCF. Second, if you have a question about this specific coin, then just ask it. If your question pertains to something else, then please open up a new thread, for example in the support subforum. Thx.

Very nice and I would guess well in the 3 digits for a price. I splurged on one recently as well. It's that time of year.

Very nice TB but how do you know it's a 1987?

Thanks all! It really is just a dandy doodle of a coin. And mcshilling, if the missing piece of die contained the date, and that piece was struck by the obverse die, and the numbers 987 are clashed on the coin, I think there is no other conclusion available than 1987 for the date.

Fantastic error coin, nice grab. I saw one recently up for sale but way out of price range. This is a great example too.
