I have had increasingly bad luck with coin shipments over the past two years. High value items regularly disappear from my porch and mailbox. As a result of that I got a PO box, but there have been problems with that too. The most recent example was a Spanish ebay seller who insisted on using UPS. The item didn't arrive, even though I checked the porch within ten minutes of the delivery notification. When I filed a complaint with ebay they sided with the seller. To add insult to injury the seller sent me harassing emails for filing the complaint, and left the following semi-illiterate feedback: GREAT CARE!! DEALING WITH THIS USER IS NOT RECOMMENDED, ATTEMPTED TO DECEIVE! RECEIVED YOUR ORDER AND CLAIMED!! ALL PROBLEMS!! AVOID IT!!!! Drama is like this is just not worth it anymore. He has my money and I have nothing but a nasty feedback to show for it. After losing a half dozen items using USPS, UPS and Fed Ex I'm through. It's back to brick-and-mortar shops and shows from now on. "Two minutes ago I would have sold my chances for a tired dime." Fred Astaire

Yeah that sucks. I assume the UPS tracking number showed the coin made it to your city, out for delivery. Maybe the driver made a mistake, took it to the wrong house or stole it. Did you call UPS right away and say you didn't get it? I have the local numbers for USPS, UPS and FedEx, I've have to call them a few times.
Most delivery services and their employees are honest, but you never know if a dishonest person along the way will steal a package. I installed security cameras on my house. One is above the front door. It can record 24/7, packages delivered or if they weren't delivered so I have proof. Haven't had a porch pirate yet thank goodness. A lot of people use doorbell cameras which are good to have IMO.
I think it's wise to get insurance with tracking numbers for packages, but it's a hassle applying for it and waiting for your money.
About eight years ago I ordered a coin from a German dealer. It didn't come, got a refund. SIX MONTHS later it arrived. I have no idea where it got lost. I contacted the dealer and sent him the money, he was happy I made it right with him.

The last shipment I had was my avatar coin from London. That was waaaaay back in 1983, when the overseas postal system was far more reliable.
Like yourself, I haven't the nerve to have expensive coins shipped any more. Since then, I always dealt personally, and picked them up in person and paid strictly in cash, or bank check purchased with cash. I keep as small a cyber footprint as possible. Never had a credit card.
These days, I leave the shipping responsibility with a specialist numismatic dealer, with whom I am happen to be a personal friend. He has a good business relationship with the major specialist numismatic auction houses and dealers around the World.

On any coin that is above my comfort zone for losing an item in shipping, I will always ask the seller to send with signature required. I have also have lost a couple of coins with first class shipping with tracking, but have not lost a coin with signature required. The signature required provides the buyer a tool to win the lost coin claim with ebay.

Just to add one data point, I have bought, oh maybe 100 coins or lots over the last few years, each and every one has come without a problem. I did FedEx one lot to a house where it seems to have gotten 'porch pirated'. Maybe try to get everything sent with signature required delivery?

I hate to stand up for the seller but it seems like it would be impossible to fake a UPS tracking history. They shipped you "something", so where did it go?
A less comforting data point - USPS package delivery notice was in our mail over a week ago, I got sick and couldn't pick it up, asked my wife to go get the package today before they return it, she says "I already got it." How? She went there, told them her name, and they gave it to her. So... what's the point of this delivery slip that they scan when you go pick something up? I've never lost any coins, but I'm expecting coins back from a grading service in a few weeks and this does not instill confidence.

Since signing up for the FREE USPS Informed Delivery service several years ago, I have not lost any packages. It's great to know where something is in the system and be able to know when it is "out for delivery".
It also helps to know your carrier on a first-name basis. Surprisingly, most of them have a pretty good memory of when and where packages were delivered.
May the Lord be with you if you have a "temp" or are constantly having "new" carriers.

Just wondering what shipping system, the high-end dealers/auction houses use?It is their bread and butter, and they are still in business. John1

You should be able to get the feedback comment removed. Sellers are not allowed to leave negative comments for buyers.

nss-52, the seller left that comment as a positive feedback. He knows how to dodge the rules. ebay has been a real disappointment in all this, saying they would remove him as a seller but not following through. I spent two weeks wrangling with them and got nowhere. Another reason for my attitude. The trouble started when a neighbor across the street did a remodel. Lots of sketchy types working on it. He had a security camera on his own truck showing a break in, which was of no use with the police. The trouble didn't end when he moved three years later.

thq you've clearly got a thief living nearby. As someone else suggested get yourself a decent camera and do a set up. Have a friend deliver a package a few times and you will catch your thief and have evidence for the prosecution.

first. off leaving a negative positive is completely against ebay rules. they will remove it.. you should also contact Ups, and have them verify where they dropped off your package, I believe they and usps, have gps register where items are when they are scanned.. And lastly if you used a credit card for your purchase, start a chargeback through your bank or credit card provider.

I've done all that silverwolf. Repeatedly. I have filed police reports, and wrangled with the post office, ebay and PayPal. I have received refunds for about half of the missing shipments. But every time it's the same drama. And none of these shipments has EVER shown up late. They belong to someone else now. When I read "the coin pictured is the one you will receive" I downgrade it in my mind to "someone will receive". No criticism to the seller, but as a buyer it's just not worth the trouble anymore. One last note on USPS signature delivery. One of the lost shipments was signature delivery. The driver signed it and left it in my mailbox. I complained at the post office and was shown the manifest with his signature. That was, and may still be, the policy for shipments during Covid. Signature delivery means nothing these days.

If you have a PO box, and the item is marked as delivered, and it is not in the PO box, then you need to talk to the USPS postal inspectors, not just your local post office employees.
