Self-admittedly not very familiar with the woody planchet. Any opinions on this being a woody or just an odd patina? Strike is incredibly weak.

Looks like one. Looks like the coin was polished and cleaned, but probably would reduce the value of this coin?

Looks like a woody to me—that doesn't look like surface discoloration. Nice find!

What indicators do you see for polishing/cleaning? Not discounting your opinion, just curious. I pulled this out of the ground metal detecting, it only received an acetone bath.

This looks so far like an 'improper alloy mix' error (called 'woody') with streaks or lines of varying widths and lengths. Modern cents can have a slightly similar look also from roller marks. https://www.error-ref.com/improper-alloy-mix/

nice 'fine grained' woody. (would that be an Oak or Walnut?)

I'll go with Sassafras but only because I don't get to use that word often.

Lordy, your soil must be especially kind to copper. The soil in my neck of the woods leaches from copper quite a bit.

Very cool and unusual looking woody! You can tell it is, by the consistent direction of the grain, obverse to reverse. Nice find!
