That's a much better match up now you have aligned it better. The seated half seems more worn, the shaft of the arrow stops conveniently at the joint as do the veins of the leaves. But otherwise, I really can't get my head around how such a match up was achieved. In my mind it was done mechanically, I would imagine a Half Dime pressed into the seated half would result in a squishy mess, but maybe not. The joint is not perfectly circular, but the deviations away from circular are perfectly matched up, most notably from F to D. But how does this explain the correct weights of the pieces? Does anyone have thoughts about the vertical lines running from the hip to the cheek on the obverse? And what looks like doubling of the face and chin? What a fascinating coin!

As far as the differences in color or tone, we must keep in mind the 2 pieces have been stored in 2 different old style mylar slips like what the US Mint used in the old boxed 1950's proof sets.
So, both pieces had different amounts of temperature and humidity over many years around 40 years. Much like old box sets, each coin toned out differently.
The coin.....Coins will be at PCGS under a Walk Though above express tomorrow. The grade will be rather quick, the testing and verifying of the error could take much longer.

Quote: The joint is not perfectly circular, but the deviations away from circular are perfectly matched up, most notably from F to D. I noticed that, and other less-than-circular areas where it's a perfect match, like the Half Dime was cut out of the half dollar. But how could anybody do that - cut a perfectly sized Half Dime out of a half dollar, and then remove that disk of metal? And then have the weights add up to the correct total for two coins? Among the many head scratchers, if an already struck Half Dime was struck in so perfectly, why is the cut not jagged from the reeded edge? This thing makes my head explode.

I would have liked to have seen the look on the face of the person who accepted this when they saw it!

This is a walk-through grade service and I had to approve the second fee last night as they are treating the Half Dime obstruction as a second coin. 2 Coin grade and error service on walk-through.

seems reasonable to charge for two coins. it is two coins after all.
were you able to get a large size holder to have them put in a single slab?

That makes me chuckle - what are they going to grade the second coin? Half dollar half struck on a Half Dime?

Please show us the slab(s) as soon as you get them. I hope they can get them both in one slab.
