Hi All -Signing up after nearly a 50 year absence from the hobby. I started collecting when I was only 5, and had a decent collection until in 1974 my house was ransacked and someone used two of my suitcases to carry away my collection. I was heart broken as a lot came down in my family and I built on that. They left the stamps, so I figured that was safe and have collected those since then.
As much as I enjoy stamp collecting, this past month I decided to start over with coins. Areas of interest is US, Canada, Panama, and United Kingdom. Not interested in gold coins too much, but love silver. And I didn't think I'd like bullion coins, but getting to like them more after the first month back into this. My philosophy is collect what I like.
Here to read, learn and contribute, if I can.
Thanks for listening,
Ken

Welcome! What a sad story about your loss back in the 70s. I would be devastated if something like this happened to me. Good luck on your journey.

Welcome back... I walked in on a home break-in years ago. The guy had about 2/3 of my collection in a large roller bag, set to leave. I got him out of the house and he left the bag behind. I was very fortunate. I see you're in California. Best of luck moving forward!

I had a similar occurrence around 1987 when I lost my collection I'd been building for 20 years in a burglary. As you are fully aware, it was a traumatizing experience and I completely gave up the hobby for about 12 years. Once I got back into it, it didn't take too long to get my old enthusiasm back, though! Best of luck in your pursuits!

A lot has changed in the numismatic world since you stopped collecting 50 years ago. TPG graded slabbed coins, and more importantly is the flood of counterfeit Chinese made coins that is ruining our hobby. 50 years ago you may have encountered counterfeit coins occasionally but nothing like the way it is today. Even common date low value coins are being reproduced in Chinese workshops. Best to relearn as much as you can about your collecting interests and consider everything as bogus until you can confirm otherwise. Welcome back and best of luck with your quest!

Thanks all for the welcome.
Mister T - oh yeah, slab grade coins was a big evolutions. I have mixed feelings about it, but I have to adapt. Also, I have become well aware of the counterfeits and following all I can to learn. This is a lot more work than stamps..... and why I decided to wade into it a bit.
Thanks, again, all.

Welcome back!!! I gave up coins in the early nineties when finances forced me to sell. I've been back at it now for about 10 years and I can honestly say I have a much nicer collection than I had before. Enjoy the hobby. It seems stronger than ever.
