Had a good outing with the detector yesterday. 1929 D Half in amazing condition and then there is this. Wish I could swap conditions for obvious reasons but coin is most likely a lost cause. 99.999% confident it is a 22 without a strong D 0% confidence on no weak D underneath the crud. Can anyone recommend a restoration expert that may be able to take a look at photos and make a call on this coin?

I disagree Jasper, look at last photo. 3rd digit is absolutely a 2

Whatever the date, this is beyond restoration.

I can see both 2's in the last image. But alas, a lost cause for any efforts to restore this one. it is a gonner for sure.

Here is color enhanced and comparision shot. 4th digit could be questionable but I'm pretty confident, just can't capture an image that reflects.

Whatever the date this coin is beyond help. There has been way too much surface metal loss to ever seee anything more than what is currently visible.

Seems reasonably likely that this is a 1922, but I also see something where the D mintmark should be. Regardless, there's no chance of restoring this.

I see a '22 also and a "D". Poor thing looks like a lost cause!

I think what is appearing as a D is just Crud but could obviously be wrong. There are no shadows cast at any angle - could still be a weak D however. Regardless, I'm getting validation from the Pros here that it is lost to mother nature - thanks all. I'll give a month of mineral oil soaks and ultrasonic baths to see how much crud I can remove. Will update later.

Yes, this is a lost cause to be a 1922 missing 'D'. The date appears to be a 1947 from what I can see. It is now just a Wheat cent.

Spence - I will. Have a reasonably successful process of soaking/bathing. I'll update with photos every few weeks until that D pops, or the no D version transforms into a 67 :-)
