If you collect toned coins, where do you get them from? Is ebay really a safe place to buy toned coins? Do you know how to tell if a toned coin is AT or NT? I will show a NT and then a AT below.

I can't tell the difference between AT and NT, yet. But want to learn.

Aren't those Gobrecht dollars? Is either one of them yours?

Artificially toned and naturally toned. Artificially toned: Someone purposefully subjected the coins to conditions that would tone a coin, faster than would happen naturally (I suppose).

Oddly enough At in the Glossary at the left states currency of Laos. Many people say they can easily spot the difference in AT and NT coins. However, it is well known that many AT coins have been slabbed by TPGS's. I know of one dealer that sent in a AT coin and it did get slabbed and no mention of it being AT. Of course that could be for several reasons. One is he is lying. Two it was a quack of a TPGS. Three, someone did a great job of toning.
There is TCforum web site that specializes in Toned Coins. I looked it over seveal times and it appeared that many there too really are not able to always tell a NT to an AT.
I have experimented in making some toned coins at times in the past. Not the fast method but usually just things like placing on a window sill, burying in my yard, etc. Some work, some don't.
As to ever buying any coin on ebay where you can not actually see the coin close up in person, I'd keep away from that.

Some folks happen to be proponents of NT, like myself, and some tend to frown on it. IMO, how on Earth can't you love them. It takes in some cases, decades and sometimes such as the case of some of the Morgans, centuries. There is obviously a huge market for NT coins as the populations of AT coins I am sure outweighs the NT coins. I am with just carl and would stay away from raw coins on ebay that claim to be NT. On to the TPG's, I sent in a 1943 Silver War Nickel that spent most of it's life in an old album as I purchased the album from an older gentleman that wanted to sell off his collection. This coin was every color of the rainbow. Well, PCGS sent it back to me body-bagged stating, "questionable color". Now to me, this phrase tells me that even PCGS was unsure. It's NT and I plan to send it back in a couple of years. You just never know with the TPG's. The only TPG that will slab anything and everything as NT or genuine is SGS. But then again, a F12 coin graded by PCGS cracked out will come back MS65 by these "graders".

There have been coins certified by Top Graders and the coins were artificial. With closer inspection and experience you can develop and even tell the difference on whether is AT or NT. Of course there are those coins where they just are so hard to tell because the coin doctor has done such a good job.

Poor dog....lol :)

Snooba, that's a nice site but not many toned coins. I am working on a site and will be selling some nice toned coins there for everyone. It will also include numerous links to help you better understand the hobby of collecting United States coins and paper money. The links are to other sites that write or teach about this hobby. Articles of all sorts will be displayed to make it easy for you to find the answers to your questions.

You will find articles about Toning of coins "my favorite", errors, making, history, grading, collecting, counterfeiting, and much more. .Even a section naming people that sell fake toned "AT" coins on ebay. This is all to show everyone what I know, what I preach and what I love.

Hope to finish the site soon

Rigo,

Can you expound on the Gobrecht dollar that you are saying is artificially toned? Was the value of the coin lowered when/if they did do that?

Thanks,

steve

rggoodie, artificial toning
Adding color(s) to a coin by various treatments with chemicals, heat and other methods in an attempt to increase its value. While a coin with natural toning may at times provide exceptional eye-appeal and command higher prices than an untoned specimen, a coin known to have been artificially toned (a deceptive practice) will bring much lower than usual prices.

Natural coloration of a coin caused by the atmosphere over a long period of time. Some collectors prefer attractively toned coins, and will pay premiums to acquire them. natural: Surface coloration resulting from normal exposure to environmental conditions, occurring over a period of many years. See also Artificial Toning and Toning.

Steve199, I am a collector of toned coins but not a professional. With the research and knowledge I have acquired I can tell sometimes when a coin is AT or NT. There are times when coins are impossible to detect if they are artificial. This is when I take a coin and hold it to a torch flame. The toning remained exactly the same. Natural toning would not have stayed the same. It would have had a reaction to the heat. I've seen a ton of his coins make it into NGC slabs. 95% of them are SMS or proof coins.

Below is a nickel I applied a torch to because of the perfect rainbow it had and hard to see on a coin like this. The test went perfect. Showed evidences of NT. I give some of my secrets but not all so I hope this answers some of your questions.
