Hi. I have been looking for information on a Mercury dime I have. It's a 1935. In the words "IN GOD WE TRUST" it has "IN GOD" marked out. It's done precisely. I've been collecting for a long time but not an expert. Anyway, three things tell me this could be done at the mint to Mark the die where it needed repair. The things that stand out to me are 1. The marking is too precise and looks like it was done with care. It doesn't look like a random scratch. 2. The words "IN GOD" are really worn down. You can see this through the marks and I know they had issues with "GOD" looking like "COD". So to me it makes sense it needs repair. 3. The scribble looks like 3 "W's". In doing some research it looks like the font Mr. Adolph uses to write with. But in my opinion it was a die that had the words "IN GOD" really worn out so they marked it to be repaired and either someone used the die without realizing that or the dime was marked to show how they were worn out and somehow got into circulation. Here is a close up of the marking and a letter "W" from Adolph A. Weinman's hand writing too. Edited by Dranshaw 07/03/2023 03:46 am

It's a purposely damaged coin, nothing more. It would make no sense to damage a die beyond repair to show a spot where it needed repair. The markings are incuse on the coin, if it was done to the die the marks would be raised on the coin. Additionally, Weinmann was an artist that designed the coin, but had nothing to do with the making of the coins or work at the mint of any kind. Intentionally damaged coin.

In your photo the WE TRUST appears to be off. Why is the U so much higher than the S? The U almost touches the D in GOD.

My first thought is that someone objected to a religious motto being on our coins. The location seems deliberate. Otherwise @Icutler expressed why it can't have been done at the mint.

I agree with kbbpll on this. Most likely someone in protest scratched out the In God. For sure PMD.

Agree this is a deliberately damaged coin - and it was done outside the mint.

ICU certainly nailed this one down - this is just intentional damage - outside of the mint.

This is damage, nothing else.

Maybe it's one that was minted that they see and problem with marked the coin so they knew where to fix it. I just find it really hard that the marks are in the exact place where they had known issues with the coin, then to have it look like Adolph W.'s hand writing marks and clearly in God is worn but not the rest of we trust. To many factors that make it not just a scratch. I'm going to have it checked out and see. To precise to be a scratch. DONT FORGET PEOPLE JUST BECAUSE WE HAVENT SEEN ONE DOESN'T MEAN IT DONT EXIST! After all thats how the 43 penny came about

Where are you going to have it checked out at? your LCS or a TPG? In either case, please feel free to report back with your findings either way it goes.

And let's look at what's going on with it. People say someone objected to the religious saying in God we trust. 1. Why would they do it to one dime. I have never seen this before. But could be true. Definitely but looking at this side of it 1. Pretty much only in God is marked through 2. In God has been known to be fixed with these because in God wore down to in Cod. 3. In God is worn down bad 4. The markings are exactly as Adolph W. makes his W's. 5. Someone took time and made the mark clean and precise. It would be hard to do that on a silver dime. 6. I don't think any of us have came across one like this before if so please send pics. To where we have 1. It's marked out because someone had a religious issue with it. Let me ask...why couldn't it be that Adolph W. Or someone at the mint marked it out to show where the issue lies. Right. Couldnt it be possible? Instead of set in stone as PMD. It's not just a quick mark or scratch
