This one isn't Chinese as far as I know, but don't know who made it. It does not have the die marker for the usual Chinese fakes though. But it has a lot of problems.

First, it would appear that the obverse was designed from a real coin, as the mint mark position seems to match and although mangled the mint mark font is pretty close. After that, it goes downhill fast. The easiest way to nail this one down is with the V.D.B. It has two problems. First, the whole thing is too far to the left as the initials should be more centered. Second, the dots which look bizarre, are not in the right places. Particularly the dot between the D and the B should be centered and it is not.

But what about the fact the obverse shows a lot of wear, and is maybe F grade while the reverse is closer to AU? And while you can't see it from the photos, the weight is 3.23g. Anyway, it's got fatal problems and another fake that has been taken off the market.

The story behind this one is that a dealer friend of mine got it in and nailed it as a counterfeit right away. He sold it to me for a couple dollars for my collection.

I haven't got a fake 1909 'S' VDB in my 'black collection, but
I am very happy to see this one on screen, and have it explained why it is a fake.
We all become a little bit more educated on how to identify fakes.
Thanks.

That's a tough one to spot, but the VDB is way off indeed.
Great examples!

Silvio may very well be correct. I have never been able to get my hands on a set of the Serbian counterfeits to see what the die markers are. They are better than many, but still can be figured out.

Coin, what I know are three major 1909 S VDB's contrafeits. Best and last was US. (added the MM S). Chinese: the material is very pourrous and seem to be casting and also the VDB letters orientation are different comparative with the axe of the coins. Also the S and the B in VDB has the midleline ax down.

the Serbial it is on my red line. The S make no sense. The VSB dots out of the original. The letters of USA different. The red line is where the letters are and some blue where was suppose to be.

I put here tis coin and the original design for compare. Left original and the TB coin.

Hope this help.

Thanks again TB for posting the fakes from time to time.
I had a feeling Silvio was familiar with the European (Serbia) fakes.

Silvio,
With heart problems, it sounds like you may have to cut the butter out of your diet. No more pastries with your coffee.

Seriously though, take care of yourself.

Hey Silvio.. Didn't know you were having cardiac issues. I've had three heart attacks, two three way bypass surgeries, 4 stents and I'm still kicking up a lot of dust here in Alabama. Take care and get well. Thanks TB for the lesson on fake 1090 S VDB cents.. Great post..
