I really have a tough time with Wars. It is destined for a capsule. However, given it is one of the most pristine war nicks I've dug out of the ground I'd be interested in a number grade from the pros.

Not FS, maybe 1.75 but that would be stretching it.

This resource helps too.

As an example, look at the Reverse of the 62

Edit: Looks more like AU to me. Although I am not the best at grading.

There is not a lick of wear on this coin - can you point out the wear you see? It might be a weak strike but that is another animal.

This is why War Nicks give me fits - I'm never remotely close with my perception. I know the TPGs give a little more flexibility to the grades but I find them ever so hard to accurately grade.

The reverse on the high points looks worn, but maybe it could be from a weak strike.

That softness in the hair is die wear. It seems particularly common on War Nickels. Those letters are laser sharp. Unless those scratches in the central areas of each face got interpreted as AU wear, I would think this is a low MS coin all day.

Are the surfaces original? I'm having a hard time believing a coin with that buttery silver sheen was dug out of the ground metal detecting.

I can vouch for the surfaces being original - this is one of a 17-coin spill where most coins are XF or better. Your surprise is, well, not surprising. You should've seen my reaction when I got it to this point post conservation.

Here is the graphic on this coin for my site:

Agreed smat - I think it more as a personal keepsake. Just a reminder, the "Oh Yeah, that was from .... " moment

Holy cow batman! you could teach a class on conservation. I'm blown away. I think the reverse may give it away as being cleaned if it was looked at by a TPG and agree with Brandmeister on worn dies or weak strike which is pretty common.

i'll call it AU (details) cleaned 1Step

I'm sure VC could remove remaining indications including the minor goop at 0700 on Obverse. I'll do some spot application and update once done.

Man, I am going to send all my future metal detecting finds to you!

What is an alkali wash? I mean, I know what a base is, and I could Google it, but since you've got the conservation technique nailed, it would be interesting to learn.
