I want to see what you guys think about this steel penny. I've had it for about 15 years now. Its in a 5 coin "Americana series vanishing collections set". I had never inspected it until recently. Any info will be appreciated. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Sorry about that, I had sent an email when I joined regarding pictures taken of my digital scope before posting any of them I probably misunderstood. Any advice on taking close up images of my coins without taking pictures of the screen?

@major, that isn't a re-punched date. Rather it looks like DDD to me.

With the pic given, cannot tell for sure but looks to be a replated/reprocessed coin. They were common to show a ghost like duplication to the side of some of the devices.

I'm thinking a Die Deterioration issue. Too, given the pic posted, the coin may have been plated (reprocessed).

Quote: They were common to show a ghost like duplication to the side of some of the devices. Yup, my reprocessed set shows ghost doubling too. I don't know what causes it. In a set like the OP's I'd expect it's re-plated.

Majorbluesky, As to taking pics;just use a memory card in your scope. Put the card in your computer and upload the photos, adjust the photos so the coin looks as true to the coin as possible save that pic on your computer and then add it to a post here on CCF. Make sure to use the image optimizer so the pic will fit here on CCF.Check out the tutorial upper right of page. John1

Repunched and misplaced dates as collectible variety types are limited on US coins to the years prior to 1909. It was in 1909 that the mint began using a full hubbing procedure which included the date with the design elements. Prior to 1909 the date was punched in by hand using a logo punch. Such hand punching of course led to multiple images (repunched dates) or dates out of their proper area, either too high or too low (misplaced dates).

I don't think you are getting it,Buckmac. I put this link on your post so you could see what you have is common with a re-plated cent.
