I saw this on YouTube, a YouTuber named silver wolverine. I think someone else here watches his programming. Evidently, the US Mint is going to return to better packaging, at least for now the proof ASEs, hard to tell what else may be affected. Attaching images and what my subscription also notes. Not the same boxes as before, looks more like what the Mint has sold to put individual bullion ASEs in, is the best comparison I have. There box isn't as tall and looks more like a vinyl material. But it's a definite upgrade.

It is beautiful! But I quit collecting these from the mint when they literally doubled the price for no reason (back in 2021 I think?). Their unwarranted greed (doubled...really? C'mon!) killed enjoying them for me. But that's OK, I now look at my 2016 Walking Liberty commemorative in gold that resulted from swapping one I had and smile! I wonder if they will jack the price up again b/c of this new packaging?

In My Opinion, Another Great Topic, The American Silver Eagles Have Gone UP in Price, Yet The " Quality " Control has NOT Upped their Game.... PS, While packaging will Help, That's one of The LAST Concerns I might Have, With them offering MORE products than Ever Before, and Quality, From The Actual History of buying Direct from the Mints, Being as POOR as it Is......

The appeal at these prices escapes me.

Quote: I wonder if they will jack the price up again b/c of this new packaging? According to the image I took of my subscription page, it's $80, same as last year. I doubt that clamshell adds a lot to the price, it's about as cheap as a clamshell as you can get, not as nice as the type 1 ASE clamshell, but nicer looking box and COA, IMO. The desire to have better QC of the coin is a common thought, I've noticed. Maybe they'll be able to improve that as well. I think the Mint is listening. The OGP is a very noticable upgrade, we'll have to see if the quality improves. I'm sure they are tired of all the returns.

Gilly, We Will See...... PS, Just a Note to Coinfrog, who Mentioned " Appeal ". Imagine Starting a Series, From Day One and Have been collecting to Keep Up The Series, All Mint Marked Coins, Hoping, Sweating, Palms Wet from Anticipation, Kind of Excitement .( if that's not Passion to collect, Nothing is.) The Same American Silver Eagles Collection is an Awesome, 1986 To Date, Many Flavors of Finishes Too. A Tremendous Accomplishment To Me, I am Positive, There are Many More. I am Not being Cross, I am trying to Assure , We Love THAT Series...... Just a Thought... Imagine Someone collecting Say The Longacre Designed, Indian Head Cents, Imagine How Back in Those Days, People collecting These might answer The Same Question, Times, Availability, Opportunity, and Pleasure.... I Remembered, My Friend....

I think the mint has been listening to feedback although most seem to want 1) Improved Quality Control 2) Competitive pricing and then 3) Quality packaging in that order...which seems to be similar to Mike (Morgans Dads comment above). I like the look of the new clamshell presentation case with the american eagle graphic but I wouldnt buy for that reason but is a nice add to those who regularly buy and keep them as a set. Packaging of course is all that is different for coins released in Congratulations Set packaging for example, a popular subset of the Proof Silver Eagle series. There were only 40,000 in 2023. But in those cases since it was limited people would generally send the coin in for grading to get the congratulation set attribution on the label, so the ogp was less important as far as for value. Thats odd to me as collectibles in sealed or at least original packaging (think games, action figures, movies) command a premium. It did have to remain in packaging to send in because it couldnt be identified otherwise. They used to sell a clamshell bulk presentation case in packs of 100 direct from the mint https://catalog.usmint.gov/storage/...ctors-boxes/ so I'm wondering if they will do that again. When its not so limited I think the OGP packaging is still important for presentation and sometimes Ive wondered if someday the OGP versions will spike in value since far less remain in them, as is beginning to happen with mint/proof sets of old as people continue to crack them out for grading due to the individual value of the coins, and fewer are left in the set with OGP packaging. Some coins like this C3P0 as just one example I have just seem odd to me to pull out of the nicer packaging and put into a graded holder to get a 70 vs a 69 as all should be and maybe some people would prefer the packaged version someday over a graded one, but maybe thats just me

Just a quick reply, getting ready for work. Most any set will need to be sent to grading in a sealed mint shipping box, they don't trust people, think they'd swap coins around. Unfortunate. The clamshells I imagine they'll still sell, they are meant for dealers to put bullion in as presentation pieces. Yes I really hope OGP coins will be appreciated in the future. I think they would still vastly outnumber graded though. To me (JUST my own opinion), to grade the coins really depersonalizes them. The slabs are all the same shape, etc, I know, different labels and core colors, etc, but it's nothing like having them as they were from the mint. Especially the sets, the individual proof and Uncirculated not as much as that's all it much the same. To see some of these really beautiful sets reduced to slabs is really sad, again my opinion.

Love the Topic, We The American Silver Eagle Lovers Enjoy, the Series, The Original Government Packaging, Another Plus, IMO. Sets in the Un-Slabbed condition, will be More Scarce..... Simply from the " lack of " Availability.... Coin Collecting Enthusiasts, Will have the Unique Set, As Released, in Original U S Mint Packaging. Some, Have an All slabbed Collection, Some have Multiple Sets, However you Choose, ....... Slab or Not to Slab, Many Collectors are Very strict as to Exactly how and What they collect. I am Too, Just prefer the OGP Eagles, Over Slabs

If proof ASE's are collected, then it seems to my way of thinking, that such a collector is more of a coin collector than a silver stacker. Price proof ASE $80, spot silver / ounce $24.

I welcome the return of a higher quality clamshell, it will make me feel like collecting Proof ASEs have a higher standard.
