Obviously fakes are a huge problem in the Coin World, but it has taken over this forum. Look at the current topics, 1/2 of them are for help identifying fakes. Not sure where to post this, but any thoughts on this, any chance of getting a new subforum for this, maybe right next to the Grading section?

I wholeheartedly concur. The strong demand, as evidenced by numerous postings, for a counterfeit and/or an even "suspected fake" category is obviously needed. This constant outpour of counterfeit postings is diluting the subject matter herein, namely "US Classic and Colonial Coins" .... Just my Two Cents.

My feeling is that there isn't much traffic on this sub-forum as it is, so a few counterfeit questions doesn't hurt. I think the fakes belong with the sub-forum of the type of coin it is. That's where they'll get the most knowledge specific to the questionable coin. Scroll down 20-25 posts and the last response was a week ago. It's not like this forum is being overwhelmed.

Without the fakes being posted in this forum there would not be much action. I would like to keep the forum as is. The fakes are a part of US Classic Coins and this forum is going to provide more attention, than, creating a seperate counterfeit sub forum.

I'd like to see a separate forum for fakes. I generally don't read those threads and they take up too much space.

No they need to stay together, a lot of times people don't know they have a counterfeit. If someone comes here with an 1870 Seated Liberty dollar and searches the US Classic forum for it, I want them to see the counterfeits too. I don't want them in another forum where they'll never see them. To be honest, I'm not totally happy with errors and varieties in a different forum but topics were just flying off page 1 fast.

I agree that many times people don't know their coin is counterfeit until someone tells them. So then moving their post to a separate counterfeit forum seems awkward. And what if there's a mixed verdict about it?
There was a secret counterfeits forum for a while that required permission to see it. Did that disappear or did I lose my privileges?

Quote: Without the fakes being posted in this forum there would not be much action. I think it's the other way around, there are so many fakes posted here (well it's been moved now) that people have left for other forums. Like Yogi said, "no one goes there anymore because it's always too crowded".

Quote: people have left for other forums I find this hard to believe. You're either interested in US Classical and Colonial or you aren't. As part of my interest, I like to see the counterfeits or questions about them. Is it Chinese junk, is it really good and hard to determine, is it contemporary, is it real and someone just doesn't know how to tell? It's mid-morning where I am and there's 3 new posts there since yesterday. It's not like the sub-forum is "too crowded."

Wow, never even considered leaving here due to discussions on counterfeits, which is an extremely important topic and threat to the HoBby currently. I guess Good bye to those going and please don't "take up too much space" in the process...

Well then, if the status quo is to be maintained, I'd humbly suggest adding SUSPECTED FAKES & COUNTERFEITS to the topic description. In fact, as this issue tends to dominate the category, perhaps this should head the category?
I've got a fairly substantial black cabinet, myself. I'd not before considered posting them here, as I didn't want to muddy the pond.

Seems fairly easy to add a category and test to see if there is enough interest to merit the change. I enjoy learning on here and counterfeits are a big part of that. They have been around almost as long as coins themselves. This is a non issue for me and left to those who moderate this wonderful forum.

I just looked at all the other major coin forums and only the NGC boards have a separate counterfeits forum. There hasn't been a single comment or post in it in almost 3 weeks. It's basically dead, all the counterfeit topics are in the main forum. I also checked the US Classic home page. I counted 23 titles with fake and/or counterfeit in the title. 23 out of 150. 15.3 % is hardly "overtaken" or a "constant outpour," or "dominating."
