Hello. For the past year I have been building a collection in a way that I have found to be highly effective. I'm wondering if anyone else does the same. Basically, I buy 3 bulk lots on ebay. 2 with high quality items and 1 cheaper one with what I call filler items. Proof/mint sets etc.Then I go through and pick out items I want to keep for my personal collection before mixing the lots up and posting 2 large ones with the remaining items. A typical round for me goes like this. I spend 2k on the 3 lots. Pick my stuff and get about 1600-1700 back. However, the pile of stuff I keep for my personal collection always far outweighs the 3-400 I lose dollar wise . Another words, at the end of the day I pay 3-400 for a lot that I would pay 7-800 for. I have found this to be a highly effective way to build my personal collection. In the last year I've put away quite a treasure chest and it's only cost me 2500 out of pocket. Sure there is a lot of time scouting auctions and putting lots together, but to me, that time is well worth what have been able to amass. Just curious on everyone's thoughts on this. Thank you appreciate your time.

I'm not being sarcastic. But seriously too much work to pay 2500 for a 6k collection?

I used to when I was younger but it became too much work and time invested compared to the meager profits that were made.

Depends on what you collect. If the items aren't in the $2500 than you are just buying stuff.

And according to your first post you pay $3-$400 for a lot that is worth $700-$800. To get to $6000 you need to sell over 7 sets of coins at $1600/$1700 so it's more like $2500 selling $11,200 worth of stuff, plus all your time selling and ebay costs. And taxes and all the work keeping track. So you can see why it's a lot of work.

If you enjoy that process and you're pleased with the result--stay the course!!!!!!! Collecting is a highly personal pursuit--not a formula-driven, narrowly-prescribed forced march.

Pretty much everything I buy these days is from ebay. Mostly what I buy is either below melt value or market value (enough so to turn a handsome profit). The silver I just sold here on the forum turned me a profit of $328.11 (after I went through it and replaced and upgraded my albums). I sold it for $778.85 so that's a substantial profit off silver purchased in the last month or so. While I was working I was adding to my collection and hoard using ebay.. Now that I'm retired, I can't keep as much living off a fixed income, but I can and do upgrade often!

Used to flip coins on ebay and local marketplace sites like Craigslist in high school. Built a small network and was always on call for people wanting to sell collections. At the end of doing it for about two years, at the cost of only time and starting with only $1,000 earned at my first job, I built a respectable five figure collection with silver dollars, gold, complete 7070 type set, and most importantly... bust halves!!

Nowadays the big scores are the only ones worth the time invested, especially as a working full time adult with lots of extra activities has sucked up the remainder of my days. Different world when you are able to refresh ebay in boring history class and take phone calls in between periods#128518;

Keep up the hustle!! Harvest is ripe!
Suffering from bust half fever.

Yes, it's a great way to collect if you're into world coins. You come across so much stuff you never even knew existed.

Okay I should have specified. I spend 3-400 for 7-800 in silver. I only keep silver coins. I'm talking graded Morgan's, silver proof sets loose silver ect. My personal collection is a massive pile of silver.

That is something I have not tried. I usually just find the item I want or need for my collection.

I say do whatever brings you joy. If you enjoy this process and build a collection that makes you happy, then it does not matter how much money you save. Joy is priceless.

@quicksilver,

In the end if this makes you happy and you enjoy it, thats great.

I'm not a stacker. I do have a small stash of silver, but majority of my collection is Numismatic, I assumed you were doing this for Numismatic coins.

I wouldn't say I've built my collection this way, but I have absolutely done this at times. Often you can buy a lot, pull out the coins you want and resell what's left, effectively getting a discount on the coins you keep. You are basically trading time for convenience. You have the time, someone else is offering a discount on a lot of coins for convenience sake. I've done it the other way as well - i.e., sold as a lot at a lower price because I didn't want to list everything individually.

If you've found something that works for you, stick with it.
