Hey all,

This could eventually just be gore and a coin that someone did some weird stuff to, but I really think this was mint made.

So, things to look at here:
1. There's what I believe is edge lettering. On top of Jefferson's head, there's what looks to be a B or 8 or something of that nature with other letting to the right and left. This doesn't have a feel of counter stamp to it, the letters look like that of a coin's.

2. The top left edge on the reverse looks like it has attempts of letting as well. It first resembles an off center strike but I see weird what looks like lettering in there as well. The shape it has feels like someone wouldn't be able to recreate that.

3. On the obverse, there are just huge gouges on top of his pont tail, as well has deep gouges under his face. I can believe these are man made, but the gouge on his ponytail resembles that of a strike though.

4. And just everything about the damage seems...like I've not seen it before.

Again, the lettering on the edge really is throwing me for a loop. I read on error-ref that Stutter striking is a think, and there's a third form that says this:

"In this, the rarest form of stutter strike, the resistance is provided by the planchet itself, when that planchet is significantly bent or warped. Initial contact is made at the apex of the bend at which point the unstable planchet slides to one side. The hammer die completes its downstroke in a position just medial to the initial point of contact."

The planchet is bent where the possible strike through is to the right of the planchet. I thought stuttering might make sense because if this was warped during a strike, it could have gone weird.

But again, not gonna be upset if this is just gore and someone put this in a vice, but I thought I would consult the greater minds. Let me know what you think!

Oh shoot, sorry I realized I posted this in the wrong Forum, and I'm a complete noob at this forums. My bad! I'm trying to find the way to delete this and submit it to the modern one!

I moved your thread and I agree with PMD not a mint error. Looks like someone used a hammer on it instead of a vise.

Yes, a good degree of post-strike damage. Perhaps a bit of Pareidolia in-play. Very good photos!

Looking for random anomalies on coins and hoping they match up to something collectable will take you a lot more time, wasted effort, and disappointment repeatedly finding out you have nothing but post mint damage, useless Machine Doubling, Die Deterioration, or minor insignificant imperfections (etc.).

Spend some initial time at places like error-ref.com, doubleddie.com, varietyvista.com, conecaonline.org, coppercoins.com etc. to find what actual and collectable coin errors look like.

A good way to start is, for instance, get a box of penny rolls from the bank and separate the coins by date and mint mark. Go to varietyvista.com and, date by date, use the reference there to see what errors are known for that specific coin/mint mark. Look for those specific errors/varieties using the pictures provided. After doing this for awhile you will KNOW what an actual error looks like and not have to waste time on face value and damaged coins. :)

Note I am NOT saying you are someone just looking for a way to get rich, but the following graphic represents how non- collectable imperfections on coins become famous having people think they are collectable. Note the bottom line specifically tells you how to save yourself time and start finding things the hobby actually collects.

to the CCF and PMD. One of the first things to learn when looking for errors is when there is a scrape, divot, hole or any other mark on the coin with a corresponding buildup of metal alongside of it, 99.99% of the time it's damage. It can't happen in the minting of the coin.
