I don't think this nickel would grade high enough for TPG, but I do think it is mighty close to FS. Thanks for your opinions and comments.

Sorry...I did not mean to "double up" on captainkurt's post.

It's definitely 5FS, and might be close to 6FS.

Rather nice steps. Would love to see this one in-hand (in a perfect world).

I think this one could get the FS designation.

Thanks for the comments. I have a credit on my NGC account and may take a chance on this one grading better than expected. However, it appears that PGCS may be a little more "liberal" on these FS designations.

You got 5 but I doubt 6. Nice nickel.

I can't see how this wouldn't get a FS at either NGC or PCGS. Nice coin!

Although it's a very nice coin, full steps nickels are not particularly rare for 1946-D. I don't think that the price really takes off until you hit MS67FS. If you do choose to submit, good luck! =)

PCGS only requires 5 FS if I recall for the designation and as Brandmeister said, market only is worth it for MS67. This is a tough call. Like Brandmeister has stated there are a lot of full step available for this year/mint so they can be picky. My bet would be the best best case scenario is NGC MS64 6FS but realistically you probably fall a short of that. Whats the market for this scenario? Probably not much as people wouldn't pay a premium. NGC doesn't even list a price.

Correct, PCGS grades for 5FS.
NGC will apparently also grade 6FS, and that designation is worth extra NGC registry set points. I have no idea whether that makes a coin much more desirable or not. If anyone figures that out, let me know, because I have a raw 1942 that is 6FS.

NGC price guide shows up to $500 for 1942 6FS
Doesn't answer your question because price guides and market prices achieved don't line up but population report shows very few examples.
I guess auction history would be my next research, but it seems with less than 30's T1 and T2's graded in 6FS there wouldn't be much to go on.

Considering other attributed FS Nickels by TPG's that should not have qualified , this one will get the FS designation. Lines are intact without distraction. Nice find.
