I'm sure many folks received the email from the US Mint yesterday morning regarding early news about the Mint's programs for the 250th anniversary of United States independence. Both circulating and coin & medal programs were announced.

Specific to the coin & medal program:

Quote:
Today, on Independence Day, the U.S. Mint proudly begins the official countdown to the 250th Anniversary of the United States. In 2026, the United States will mark 250 years of independence.

In addition to releasing newly designed circulating coins in 2026, the U.S. Mint will also release a one-year-only Best of the Mint coin and medal collection that reflects the rich numismatic history of the United States. Today, as we commemorate the birth of American independence, we proudly debut the first Best of the Mint Coin and Medal Set to be released in 2026.

BEGINNING WITH A LEGEND
1916 Mercury dime GOLD COIN AND SILVER MEDAL COMPANION

If Grandpa had a cigar box with his old wartime spare change, chances are it held at least one Mercury dime. Adolph Weinman's classic design, showing Lady Liberty in a winged cap (symbolizing freedom of thought) debuted in 1916 and was retired in 1945. Often referred to as the Winged Liberty Head Dime, the Mercury dime served American commerce through the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, and two world wars.

Crafted in 1/10 oz of 99.99% fine gold, the 2026 reissue will be paired with a companion silver medal featuring an all-new, modern design inspired by elements from the original 1916 Mercury dime design.

I have a feeling that Mercury dime in gold is going to look pretty good. Get your coffers stocked. 2026 is shaping up to be an expensive year! If all the special reissues are 1/10th of an ounce I *may* be able to swing it but we'll see what the issue prices are.

While I'm not interested in a gold "re-issue" of a silver coin, the medal and its modern interpretation of the original's design elements holds some potential interest for me.

Since they produced this in 2016 and I finally just got my set completed I was hoping they wouldn't put this out. But here I am getting ready to pay probably 5K for 1/10 oz of gold. I must say I don't like the medal though.

My biggest confusion is how they can back date this 1916? I guess they can do anything they want. Huh.
I wonder if it will be the size of a dime or 1oz?
I don't care for that medal. They could do the dime in silver, that would be better. Get the govt to agree on something and let them just make commemorative Mercury dimes, is it that huge of a deal?

It will. I have a paused subscription on the silver proof set, because it got so expensive. Maybe I should think about "unpausing" it for next year.

I'd be a buyer for a Silver Reverse Proof Set ( as was issued in 2018 for the 50th Annniversary of the San Francisco Mint )

I have that set. I would not mind if it had some company.

Here's the images from Mint's website of the 1916 Mercury dime Gold Coin and the One Ounce Silver Companion Medal. I really like the silver medal and will be definitely be a player depending on the price.

Wow! Yes, I really like that. Count me in. I would love for them to offer all the companion meals on subscription. Money matter and I do not need the additional stress!

For whatever reason, the reverse of the medal makes me think of the 1940 Half Crown from New Zealand that I have in my collection:

I enjoy the look of that silver medal. It might become the first modern mint issue I ever purchase.

I can see the design motif similarity between them.
