I know there is some debate over whether Cuds are errors or not, but I'm still of the opinion that a coin made with broken equipment is an error coin. This one wasn't a pick, but was spotted by a friend of mine and was listed exactly as is and more or less correctly. However, at $40 for an unlisted Retained Cud, it just seemed like a fair deal so I picked it up. Images have been sent to JC for possible inclusion as a new listing. 1909 VDB Lincoln Wheat cent mint error - Retained Cud

Very cool pick up and a nice, dark woodgrain in the background. The coin has very nice eye appeal.

Great looking 1909 & Retained Cud and I like the metal deficiency along the obverse rim opposite. $40 was a great price for this.

Nice error coin, TB. I concur with your opinion that a coin made by broken equipement is an error coin. Who disagrees? And why would they?

Thanks all for the great comments! As for whether it is an error, there was a push to make things like this called "die varieties" or something like that. I never really agreed with that although it's not a bad argument as Cuds are attributed like varieties.
