Now that I've been into the coin collecting game for awhile, I'm starting to see my areas of interest shift. I started with Jefferson nickels mostly due to the ability to easily collect all the coins in the set with no stoppers. Eventually got into Buffalo nickels, and a few other various coins. Lincoln cents, obviously. I'm starting to find the appeal much more of getting into coins that I theoretically can't afford. Lol. Such as Indian Head cents, Shield nickels, etc. More modern coinage just isn't really that appealing to me as much. A member on here in a previous post pointed out that they enjoy using blank albums to fill with whatever coins interest them. I believe it was Marv65. I think this is a good approach, and instead of having a pre-set series with slots that won't be filled, you can really kind of focus on coins that interest you instead of worrying about costly coins that you (i.e. me) will never be able to afford. I had floated the idea of collecting some decent Shield nickels and Indian cents. Who knows what else I'll come across. Despite being an overly expensive series, you can achieve a much more easily put together set of Shield nickels by doing a set without varieties and stick to just years. I've found some decent ones on ebay for under 20 bucks a piece. Nothing high grade, of course. So, does anyone else find more classic coins interesting at all than modern coinage? The only coins that really interest me much still are Lincoln cents and Jefferson nickels.

I have done it, with Lincolns and Mercury dimes and Franklin half dollars. But there are too many other cool coins to be added to my collection to spend my time and efforts on only one. Just my feeling.

I agree with Hondo, when I rediscovered collecting as an adult I wanted to acquire as many types as possible, and cared little about completing date sets. How about that, see how far back you can go in finding a nice pleasing example of great old historic types?

I have sets of the most popular three—Indian Head cents, Buffalo nickels, and Mercury dimes—in a custom album with blank pages. But you already knew that. I also have whatever is in my 7070 type set. Beyond that, I have never started any other classic sets. Though about it, sure, but never took the next step. In the future, maybe. I just want to fill those last three "Original" Dansco holes first.

Collecting vintage U.S. coins as complete series will eventually dead-end into expensive year or mintmark coins. Collecting U.S. coins as a complete type set will eventually dead-end into expensive denominations. Collecting modern U.S. coins as complete variety sets will eventually dead-end into expensive or rare coins. I can't say that any particular vintage U.S. denomination grabs my attention. I do like Flying Eagle cents, but more for interesting varieties. Some of the series with identical designs like Seated Liberty and Barber are just boring. If I were to get tired of modern U.S. designs, I would be less inclined to reach back in time than I would to start exploring commemorative coins or international coins. There are so many beautiful world coins that can be acquired at reasonable prices. I have been picking up tiny beautiful coins for $1 here, $3 there. They look great when photographed under magnification.

That's why taking an approach to building your own collection, however you choose, as little or as big as you want, is a much more approachable strategy IMO. Yeah, I'm starting to feel this. Back when I got back into this hobby in 2024, I thought it was really cool to be able to do coin roll hunting and fill books/albums as much as you can this way. However, now that I've basically completed my Jeffersons and most of my Lincoln cents that can be obtained from circulation, I find myself... Bored with this scenario. Outside of Jefferson nickels and national park quarters, there aren't any coins honestly that interest me to do this any longer. I would go through Lincoln cents in the past since it was such a long endeavor for my Dansco 7100 and that was really enjoyable, but we know the scenario that cents are in now and this is no longer doable. I'm finding it much more enjoyable and interesting building smaller sets of coins that I like a lot more and can set up how I want. Next on my radar at some point are some Shield nickels, if I can ever find out how to house them besides 2x2's.

The only modern coins I have any interest in are the Presidential dollars, mainly because I have always been into presidential history. Currently my main interest is US colonial coins but dabble in some others, a few ancients and currently finishing up a set of Barber halves. Current coins, errors, and such just do nothing for me.

Don't look on ebay for a Dansco 7070 at the moment - those are crazy prices. You can pick them up for a reasonable price at your LCS or a coin show.

Yeah.... Evidently, this is not one of Dansco's albums that are in production currently? This same old song and dance is starting to get old lol Looks like I won't be getting a 7070 any time soon.
