The grade certainly surprises me. How would you assess this lovely coin?

MS63. Depending on how deep some of those marks are, it may be a 62. It is an attractive coin but has a fair number of marks.

Higher end 63 with good eye appeal. Has a little bit of that chalky, dipped look to it.

I see two things a TPG would notice.

First, there is some discoloration on the cheek, hair above the ear, hair above the eyes, and cap curl. There may be some discoloration on the eagle's breast. Second, there are a few deeper dings on the obverse on the cap curl, behind the cap, behind the nose, on the cheek, and above the first left star. The reverse has a couple dings in the middle of the eagle's breast and across the lower wings and breast. There are also quite a few very small scratches on the central devices, and obverse rim. The dings are consistent with bag marks, but the small scratches again may suggest possible light circulation to a TPG.

That said, I don't see actual signs of circulation, so IMHO this coin is UNC. I have seen coins deemed to be sliders by TPGs with fairly similar marks, though. How the coin looks in hand is vital.

To me, the number of marks and strength of some of the marks is consistent with a bourse floor MS-63.

MS63 is a wide grade, especially with Morgan dollars. I've seen some that should be higher and some lower. I'm guessing this was given a 63 based on the cheek and the somewhat chalky appearance as previously pointed out. It's a pretty coin no matter what the grade and I'd be glad to have it, especially with that peripheral obverse toning!

MS63 The cheek has a lot of light rub. Maybe on a bad grading day MS62

I would put this as an MS63.
