This is another Wheatie I was able to pick up last weekend.
Since my scanner takes such poor scans, I opted to use the seller's photos. Based on those photos, what grade would you assign this coin?

I will stick my neck out. How about AU-50? It might be higher. I am not good grading off photo's.

I'd call this solid for F-12, with decent surfaces for the grade. The wheat lines are about half complete and the rims are strong. The PCGS grading guide states that on a VF-20 Lincoln Cent "most wheat lines are blended, with a few separate", so the reverse at least seems to meet PCGS standards for very fine.

I expect the photos were lightened to better show the detail. Is the color darker in-hand? If the image color is accurate then I must assume it has been cleaned in some fashion. Still, there are no hairline scratches from an abrasive cleaning. I'd like to see larger photos to closely inspect the mintmark but the coin has the look of a genuine 1914-D.

Looks like a VF-20 to me at quick glance. It's late, so I might revisit this tomorrow with fresh eyes.

I would give it a VF-20, very nice key date.

I would call this a vf reverse, a fine front therefore a fine overall.

Went on a little fishing trip, and back home today - no phone, no tv, no mail, and no computer - lovin' it! Anyway, it put me late in responding to this message.

Thanks to those of you who responded. This coin was waiting for me when I got back, so I scanned it, and attached it here.

One of the problem I am having with my old scanner is dark verticle lines (as you can see in the scan) but , if you can work around the lines, I think the scan will give you a better view of the coin.

Again, I appreciate all your responses. Thank you.

Ralph

Oh Joabler - the color is a pleasing brown. The seller's photos were, indeed, enhanced (lightened to show the coin better). My scans were enhanced as well (contrast, brightness, sharpen) to try to give a better view of the details of the coin.

Nice piece! It could go anywhere from F15 to VF25 and I'd feel comfortable calling it VF20.

You definately need to have that slabbed. At minimum F12, however I see a little separation between the cheek and jaw and the reverse is nice, it might go VF-20.

Okay, in hand - On the obverse: there is a slight seperation between the cheek and jaw, some details left in the hair, ear and bow tie are worn but show clearly, legend, date, and mint mark are clear.

On the reverse: the legend is clear, the wheat stalks show wear, but there is full seperation of the lines; however, there is flatness due to wear.

Overall, a nice coin - I was thinking fine for the grade.

As for having it graded and slabbed - I've never sent one in for slabbing... yet. I just collect coins for the pleasure I get from the hobby - get a handful of a certain type, buy an album, and go from there.

I do have an spread sheet for whoever gets my coins when I'm gone - give them an idea of the grade, and current value so they don't get skinned when they sell them, and sell them they will - no one in my family gives a hoot about collecting coins.
