Hey,
So basically, I am starting my coin collection. I am planning on working on the Dansco 7070. AS of now, I have a small collection of coins (Most are in just good condition, but my job doesn't pay much so I am doing the best I can). I would like to start with commemoratives.
I currently have the statue of liberty and George washington half dollar proofs. I would need 2 more for the 7070.
My price limit is $20 per coin. My question is this: I can get a circulated 1893(?) columbian half dollar which does not look all that great (its still nice and old though) or I can get 2 more proofs (Olympics and bill for rights) for $30 each.
Do you guys have any opinions on which I should go for? 4 proofs for the 7070 or 2 proofs 2 old coins.
I am leaning towards proofs so that in 20 years or so, they will be worth much more than the UNC or Cir ones will be. Is this reasoning correct? Or should I go for the 1893 coin, even if it is not as 'nice' looking. Since my other coins are non-proofs, this part of the album would look really nice.
Any advice?

Needgames4lyfe - Welcome to the forum
This question gets asked a lot. And it really comes down to what you like, but know you can always change them out in the future. Coin collecting for many becomes a life time hobby.
There are some that will only want high grade type in their coin books, which is really cool and then there are some that like to get the best they can afford or want to spend on a coin .. that is cool also.
I would say buy the ones you like and not just because of price. There are many coins that could fit into your price range. I bought a VF stone mountain for $20 and a few weeks ago I bought a Booker T Washington for silver price $4. The site I buy from has a lot of modern commemorative half dollars for less then $20, including the proof Bill or Rights (which is silver) for I think $14. I really like the 2008 Bald Eagle half dollar it is a very nice looking coin in proof or UNC.

I'd either do all proofs or all classic (older) commems. I think to mix them might look out of place. I went with 4 classic commems, but this was the more expensive route and probably ran me $250+ for the 4 I wanted - Columbian, Lexington/Concord, Pilgrim and Oregon Trail. If you are on a budget (aren't we all?), you can probably go the proof route cheaper. There is nothing to say you can't change course later on as more funds become available. The 7070 is quite an undertaking and will cost some money no matter what you do, so take your time with it. Best regards, Ken

Welcome to CCF, a great resource. Yes, take your time. I have discovered that coins can, at times, fluctuate in value depending on how in vogue they are. Don't hesitate to be sidetracked collecting different groups of coins. I probably have half a dozen collections going with Commemoratives now being hot due to some good deals I have gotten recently. Next week I may be working on my Indian Head cent project or organizing my tokens. Cents and nickels are good coins to roll search. Cents because they are inexpensive and nickels because you can still find oooold coins in circulation. And I do believe the unsearched coin roll is extinct, or at least very endangered. Good luck, and don't buy any of the crap huckstered on TV. Unless you want to start a huckstered crap collection, of course.

Goldrush; Thanks for the reply! Could you give me the link to the place you buy from? Also, I was thinking in terms of this: If I was to buy one now, and decide later on I wanted the other, which would it be cheaper to get? Like which would be more expensive in the future, making it harder to add to my collection. Thanks! Kenkat and Parklane - Thanks for your advice! I actually am doing pennys right now too (taking out coppers and collecting a set). I understand the 7070 will take a looong time, but I hope to do this for a good amount of time. BTW - here are the coins I have collected already: 1831 - 1 cent coin (large) (2) IKE bicentennial dollar 1906 Liberty nickel1915 Barber quarter1868 & 1866 & unknown Shield nickelKennedy bicentennial half dollar 1856 seated liberty quarter(?) 1986 statue of liberty half dollar 1919 Mercury dime1906 Indian Head penny1908 barber nickel Unknown Buffalo nickel1941 & 1944 Wheat penny1979 (2) Susan B Anthony dollar2000 (2) Sacagawea dollar1979 Eisenhower half dollar Bicentennial quarter George Washington commemorative coin 1960-2009 complete penny set 1936,1941.1944,1952,1957 pennies

It's good to see young collectors come to the hobby. As far as commemoratives, do what you like, and you can always adjust later. I have Columbian, Booker T. Washington, Statue of Liberty and George Washington. So you can see I have mix of old/new. Keep posting and when you reach 50 quality posts and 14 days you buy/sell here. You will find good honest sellers here. Duke

If you decide to go with the Columbian Expo coin, you should be able to get a nice looking AU coin for $20. Maybe even an MS coin for that money if you are really patient. An AU-58 coin can look nicer than an MS60 to MS63 coin.

A collection with a unified look is more pleasing to look at than a mish-mash of coins. But it is too expensive for the typical collector to fill a 7070 with all proof issues. Perhaps the answer is to fill your 7070 with all business-strike coins, with modern issues in BU, and progressively older coins in AU and XF condition. Your budget would stretch farther, and you wouldn't have modern proofs threatening to make your Wheaties and Walkers seem shabby by comparison. Building on this, you could make a point of restricting your 7070 to circulating issues, and still use classic commemoratives that actually saw circulation, such as the 1893 Columbian, 1923 Monroe Doctrine, 1946 Booker T. Washington, or even the 1953-54 Carver/Washington or the 1925 Stone Mountain. All but the Stone Mountain can be found in AU for under $30, and even the Stone Mountain can be found under 50 dollars.

I started out with proof modern commems because they really didn't interest me all that much and since dansco decided to put 4 holes for them I was going with the cheapest way I could to fill those holes that didn't interest me anyway. Since then I have purchased a couple classics (one was actually free) to put in place of the moderns but since they really still don't interest me I haven't really been actively looking.

If I was to buy one now, and decide later on I wanted the other, which would it be cheaper to get? Like which would be more expensive in the future, making it harder to add to my collection. Thanks!

needgames4lyfe The site I use the most for my commemortive coins is www.coinsbybobby.com There are many good sites to order fromm, and there is always ebay. I keep a favorites list and may check several of them for prices before I order. As for which coins may go up more than the others that would be hard to guess. Most times any of the rare coins, old or new will go up more than the common coins. The coins we have been talking about old commemorative and new .. should stay pretty stable.

yes I know that is why I said I would send you an email. I will send you an email right now but wanted to be sure this would be something you were interested in before I sent the email to you. This isn't anything expensive but at least it will be less holes you have to fill and I will have the joy of knowing I helped a YN at the same time. I also have a couple others (one I think everyone needs at least one of in their collection) that you do not have listed as a coin you already have for the album that I will send as a bonus nothing extravagant but may be a little hard to find in the price range you said you have to stay in

That's really great of you, Bryan needgames... I haven't started a 7070, so I can't answer for that. But I find, when looking at coins together in 2x2's in binder pages, that it doesn't bother me to have business strikes/proof or MS/circulated together at all - each has its own character, and I like them all
