Hi all,

I received lots of Morgans and other silver from my Grandpa. I am wondering if any are worth anything other than melt value. I would like to know the grade they fall under and approximate value. Never know, I may have something nice?

Here are the first two (an 1899 quarter and an 1890 Morgan dollar):

Thanks!

Welcome! They are definitely worth more than melt.
That 1899 Barber looks to be an AU55 coin. Nice!
The Morgan $1 looks to be AU53. Nice as well.
As for value, CDN puts an AU 1899 @ $96 and an AU 1890-S @ $26
Yours would be worth slightly more than that.

Based on these 2 coins it looks like you may have a pretty nice collection. You may want to check numismedia.com for the collector price list to get a general idea of values. Keep in mind those are prices you would expect to see in a retail store.

WOW thanks both of you. I had no idea! I received over 200 coins from my Grandpa. I have a question, when I go to sell these do I just find a coin store and tell them I want to sell or do I go about it some other way? I was laid off and need the money otherwise I would not sell.
Rest in Peace

Any higher grade barber coinage(like that quarter) will be worth many multiples of melt. You should post some of the others.

I'm not sure you will get the best price if you take them to a dealer. You might be better off selling them individually on ebay if you have the time and patience to do so.

I collect Barber quarters and I'm interested to know if you have any others like the 1899?

Longgunner, I hope you can wait long enough to get multiple offers from potential purchasers. A careless rush sale could cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars. If that Barber quarter is representative of the entire collection you're sitting on a handsome legacy from your Grandpa.

By all means post more of these coins (the photos are very nice, by the way!). Get a copy of Yeoman's Red Book of US coins and look up all your coins to see if you have some better dates. Above all, take the time to form a reasonable idea of the collection's value. You could even build up to a 50-post count here on CCF so you become eligible to offer the coins to our members.

Good luck!

I don't have any more quarters like that. I have lots of Morgan dollars ( a wide variety of dates) lots of piece dollars and Indian heads. Quite a few standing liberty halfs and mercurys. I also have a lot of foreign silver as well. Oh, a ton of S wheat cents.

I will get the book!

Yes, I used a scanner. Could not get camera to take descent pics.

Longgunner! You got some very nice coins from your Grandfather. He obviously had an eye for a good quality coin! The coins you posted are sharp!

Second:

Keep 'em coming! (A camera is better than a scanner, but we'll take a scanner if that's all you have...)

Can't find if this has been mentioned already, but make NO attempt to clean any of the coins. Hold them by the edges only. And don't let them bash around in some box together. They don't appear to be in any kind of protective holder. Given some of the estimates you've received on the value of the American coinage, it may be worth going to a coin shop and purchasing the appropriate holders for the sizes of your coins. They should be fairly cheap. You would hate to detract from their value.

You need to post a clear picture of the Obverse and Reverse of each of these coins because the Morgan and Peace dollar series has whats called a VAM which can make 1 worn out coin that looks like a cull be worth thousands. A VAM is a die marriage between the Obverse and Reverse die and each of these types of coins has many thousands of VAM's associated with them. Some do not add value but some could make you rich very quickly and you could sell that one coin and keep the rest. This isn't a common occurrence but it can happen but there are some that will make a normal looking coin that would be worth 20 bucks worth a couple hundred just because of the specific VAM it is
