I got this set a few days ago and was wondering if this happens a lot. If you have something similar please share. Thanks.

WOW! Super find! No, that doesn't happen a lot....I've never seen one in a mint set.
Congrats!

Nope! I honestly say I saw it now for the first time in a sealed pack.

Those are quite scarce in the original packaging, but don't let that make you believe it adds to the value. The packaging doesn't matter with regard to the coin...but there is still some hope...the coin is somewhat valuable by itself. Nice find!

I tend to agree with BadThad .... and with all due respect to Chuck who always offers solid advise on coin error issues I disagree with his view .... Quote: but don't let that make you believe it adds to the value. The packaging doesn't matter with regard to the coin IMHO ..... if I had the choice of a 'normal' 1973 Mint Set versus this one .... I would pay a premium to purchase the clipped planchet Mint Set. True .... the value of the clipped Kennedy in isolation is not different .... but the presentation in a USA Mint Set adds a market perception of greater value ...... and most collectors would pay more regardless of the isolated value of the coin. My humble opinion ...... whatever .... a rare and fun find. David

I am on the femnce, but I do think that if there is a coin in a mint set, that has value above that of the complete set, then it should come out. I am not sure which way to leap, in the case od a proof set, however. Any way you look at it, it is not common! If you tend to go for errors, then I would leave it intact., IMHO. BTW, I like your gloves.... Dick

Chuck, I do also wish to disagree with your opinion,IMO you are an expert in the copper coin arena, and then some, but in your own words "you are not an error expert",I believe you have stated this in many of your posts(over the years). I believe this "set" which contains the clipped Kennedy coin, in the original you S Mint cello package, is worth a lot more for the obvious reasons( being in the original package) and coming from the Mint in that condition.I also feel this is NOT a common thing to find, in the original cello, anywhere. If it is indeed not tampered with!
Great find, exceptional package, I too collect Mint/Proof sets and have not seen one in the set like this before, collecting since 1963, well done!!!

I'm with Badthad as well, as some people are willing to pay crazy (Well, at least higher than normal) prices for errors in odd circumstances.. I once sold one of those common PCGS sample slabs for over $45 because PCGS had mislabeled the date on the holder.

I disagree as well. I believe this would add a nice premium to an otherwise very common, shall I say, undesirable MSet. I wonder what an error dealer would sell that for?

It's obvious that a set with an error coin in it would sell for more than a normal set. Whether or not it would sell for more as a set than the individual coins would is an entirely different question.....

It wouldnt surprise me if the value of that set were $50...I dare say more.

The Kennedy by itself is probably worth around $25 but I do not see much more value than that added to normal value of the Mint Set just because it is still in the cello. I see it as more of a novelty than anything else, similar to the Mint Sets that have duplicate coins.
