Simple ... educate yourself on the details of the coins you are seeking and learn for yourself how to detect real from fake.
You have a great resource here at the CCF ... but your best defense is personal knowledge.
Do you have reference books? ... Are you studying them?
What matters at the end of the day is personal knowledge ... and only you can choose to acquire it or not.

It used to be that you were safe with TPG coins. Not so anymore, even some of them have been fooled. Sad.

nicklesearcher is 100% correct, the hard truth is you have to learn to recognize coin quality and authenticity, so you don't get taken. There are tons of publications that deal with grading (like PHOTOGRADE) and counterfeiting, books that deal with coinage in general and with particular types, like Morgans, Peace dollars, cents, etc.... Lots of threads here on CCF that deal with grading and counterfeits, also. It doesn't take long, and you'll find you're picking up useful tips, and you'll enjoy this hobby all the more as you gain these skills.

And you don't have to learn everything about all coins to be knowledgeable. Concentrate on what you collect or even the date(s) you are thinking of buying. There are enough fake slabs out there to make guarantys impossible, so learn to trust in yourself.

Education is key. I saw some really nice Morgans and Peace for $31 dollars each and a few ASE and one Canadian silver maple leaf for $39 each. The problem was that some morgans were not looking correct so I just passed the entire dealer as I was in a traders market

And use common sense. If a U.S. coin is being sold on ebay or anywhere for that matter from China, don't buy it!

Also use ebay feedback to help you decide if it's a wise buy.

Quote: Education, or buy only certified! I sort of agree, but even slabs can look close to authentic and be fake. The crooks have also learned to copy the certified holders to stick the fake coins in. You can learn how to spot these too, but the best defense is knowing how to differentiate the fakes from the authentic. For instance, here is a link, just a random one, that I have found about fake PCGS slabs.

I personally refrain from buying high dollar stuff from ebay, not that I own much of it anyway. I prefer to buy mid-high price coins like 09s and 14d Lincolns from a dealer who I trust. You can fill holes with coins from ebay, but keys and nice coins; you need to know what your doing or buy elsewhere.IMO. Also if it's to good to be true, it's probably a scam. Use common sense and know the aspects of the coins your working on.
