interesting coin, don't think I've seen similar from the 1980s, I'd guess a combo of grease and Die Deterioration

My first thoughts were PMD and then circulated to wear it down some.

Greetings, first time I've posted to any forum, so I apologize if this post doesn't conform to the guidelines. I just found this 1984 Nickel and have no idea what this discoloration may be. Could anyone provide any insight to what this might be. Thank you very much. Tony

This nickel was struck on an abnormally hard "pristine" planchet that had bypassed the annealing oven. Here's another example:

Abnormally hard planchets aren't necessarily pristine as there are other reasons why a planchet might resist plastic flow. But as far as I know, all pristine planchets are harder than normal. Except zinc planchets, of course, which never go through the annealing oven and, as a consequence, lack tumbling marks.
