I was thinking about how the American Silver and Gold Eagles are going to change styles in the middle of a year, and both styles will be minted.

That got me thinking about other times this has happened.

What would be a definitive list of a coins where two completely different styles were minted in the same year? I am excluding things like the State Quarters or Presidential dollars.

Example:
Indian cent, Lincoln Cent, 1909
Buffalo nickel, Jefferson nickel, 1938
Barber dime, Mercury dime, 1916

An interesting thread. I've considered putting together a set like this.

You could argue that there were three designs for the 1883 nickel.

Edit: removed extra word.

Does the 1982 LMC count?

If the 1982 cent is considered, as John mentioned, what of the other small and large date coins, such as the 1960 cent?

Seeing this is on the Main Forum, I am going to sneak some Canadian Coins in here.
I'm sure there are more but these are the ones commonly known.

1920 Large and Small Cent
2003 Diadement and Uncrowned portrait. This is on all denominations,
one cent, five cent, ten cent, twenty-five cent, fifty cent, one dollar and two dollar.

I would add the following for Canada:

- 1942 Five Cent: Regular Nickel coin + 12-sided Tombac version (both feature beaver design)

- 1951 Five Cent: Regular Beaver design + Bicentennial of Nickel Refining Commemorative Design

If we are including composition, will need to add 1942 nickels and the various clad / silver varieties of dimes - dollars.

I was thinking of a completely different design, not just a different composition. I would not include the 1943 Lincoln cent. I was thinking of a series that ended, and a new series began.
