This isn't exactly a CRH story, but I wasn't sure where else to put it. I work on the second floor of a 3 story building. When I go to either of the other floors I'll look through their coffee club change cup in the break room for anything interesting. Today on my way out of work I had to stop by the first floor, so as usual I went mining. When I got done I turned around and there behind me was a guy I barely know staring at me. I said Hi how's it going? He replied "You're like that other weird guy we have around here." I asked what he meant and he said there is a guy who goes around looking through people's garbage cans for 5 cent returnable soda bottles (we live in NY).

I've been a little self conscious about my change mining in the past, but this was downright embarrassing. Anyone else ever been embarrassed by our hobby?

I should rephrase that. I don't mean being embarrassed by the hobby itself. I meant embarrassed doing something for the sake of our hobby. Hopefully you get my drift.

Thats great!

Have not embarrassed myself but my daughter gets peeved because I check all my change before I hand it to a cashier.

I keep my spending change in one pocket, and if I get change back it goes in a different pocket. Those are checked before joining the others

I get strange looks when I pickup a coin off the ground. They don't know but it might be a 1909-S VDB LWC, or maybe some silver, or maybe help pay for my next ASE.

Reading through the story I thought for sure I would get to the end and he thought you were stealing the coffee money.

Lol I have received those weird looks while poking through the "leave a penny" tray looking for wheat cents or copper cents. Normally I would put more in than I took out but after awhile all the weird looks was enough.

I have those quite often, but I've started giving those up because the ROI on the embarrassment isn't worth it :)

Sometimes reverse psychology works on these folks. I would have told him, "I am pretty weird ain't I". ;)

LOL vermontensium!

But I ain't weird, I is scary!

I embarrass everyone I am with by checking any and all change, by looking for change in vending machines (I've heard stories...) and by actually bending down to pick up a penny!

The date on the last one I picked up was 1940.

Vermontensium, I hear you, but I have to work with these people. I'm probably going to tone it down a bit. I'll still check my floor's coffee kitty every time I get a cup, but my other-floorly excursions will probably stop for a while. At least until performance reviews are completed.

Some good things have come out of past experiences though. Several people at work now regularly bring me their change rather than rolling it and taking it to the bank. I cash them out and check it myself before depositing it.

I used to be almost impervious to embarrassment. As a kid finding recyclable bottles for cash was part of my lifestyle.

As a kid, I went to the Royal Easter Show in Sydney (this show is probably the biggest county style show in the World) and picked up all of the recyclable bottles glass soda bottles and cans for cash. Went on all of the rides, and came home with more money in my pocket than I had when I left.

lol onetime I went to a bank and was like
"um I need to load up" (said to myself)
pulled up my left hand and started counting using my index finger on my right and touching each one starting at the thumb and moving to the next finger after stating a denomination
I was like
"Can I get a box of pennies"
moved to next finger
"box of nickels"
moved to next finger
"box of dimes"
moved to next finger
"box of quarters
moved to next fingers
"half dollars"

the lady just looked at me like

After staring at me for a couple of seconds I decided that it wasn't going anywhere so I proceeded to ask
"do you halves?"
she shook her had and then asked me
"what the HECK are you going to do with all of that"
I didn't know how to respond and said
"*laughing* I need them, can you withdraw it from my savings"
She looked at one of the other tellers and the other teller told her some number (probably a code for boxes or something or perhaps the total)
she goes on her computer and was like
"that's 875 dollars and just stared at me like "
I was like
"uh yep *laughs*"
and then proceed to confirm on the touch screen after sliding my card the total. She then started bending over behind the counter and pulling up one box at a time. After half way through she asked me "did you eat a big brefest this morning?"
At the time I didn't know what she was referring to so I just laughed and said yep (most likely how heavy all the coin was)
After putting all the coins in my book bag I was like
"thank you very much"
smiled and just walked away
it was pretty awkward as my bookbag could hardly hold them and it was during prime time 1:00 P.M. with lots of people in the bank
I just laughed and walked out the door as people stared at me as I struggled to stand up straight

it was hilarious lol.

My findings
1 - silver rosevelt dime
1 - silver 1944 Washington quarter
1 - war time nickel 1943 P

the pennies was a new box of 2011 cents, might bring it back to a different bank or try to use it as cash and buy, it's an unoppened box of 25 dollars of pennies straight from the bank lol, or perhaps just hoard it.

Wow greenprint, that was a lot of work for 3 silver coins! Luckily my wife doesn't mind picking up boxes for my roll hunting. She makes me do the dumping though.

it actually wasn't so bad
i find coin roll hunting pennies a terrible pain
coin roll hunting dimes and quarters I can do really really fast, pretty much take an extra 5 seconds after opening a roll to look for any silver and then dump the rest
nickels I have to flip over every single nickel and looking for the mint mark above the building
i don't trust just looking at the edge, the silver War Nickels turn a nasty ugly gray and can be easily spotted by looking at the edges, if the coin is however in good shape it may retain a very similar coloring to normal nickels, so I've heard so I checked every single one. found a couple of canadian nickles that were mostly nickel or whatever and are worth more than 5 cents in melt value, other than that I just dump the rest

for whatever reason the BoA I'm at dosen't have a fee to deposit coins you just pour into a bag and they send it to be counted, I guess it's risky because someone else is counting your change or whatever but it's the best I got.
