Is there some central locations to find what would be considered key and semi-key coins for US and Canadian coinage series? I just spent about 20 minutes looking and came up empty, thought you guys and gals might know something.

I could probably generate you a list of Canadian coins... for some it is a matter of perspective. What I consider to be semi-key dates, versus those what a roll hunter would call, are probably two very different lists.

Crowdsource it with a temporary sticky(s). Set specific definitions for the terms. We can peer-review for accuracy. I'll happily spam it with the ones I'm familiar with.

I can take a stab at the Barber dimes if asked. Collectors of a series over a period of many years
have a much different view of what is a key and what is a semi-key.
If grade is taken into consideration a 'common' good becomes a major key in XF/AU.
Many factors to consider.

What specifically are you looking for, Bobby? Do you plan to factor in condition rarities or just grade rarities? Also, do you consider unique or very scarce issues (i.e. 1913 Liberty Head) in this tally?

OxDA71D's list seems like a good place to start.

Bobby I'd be happy to hrlp you compile a list for the Canadian Coins. Although the definition of "key date" really is a matter of opinion. Also criteria for what id a series key date is hard to say, for example should errors be included? Are we accounting for conditional rarities? (Coins that are not valuable atlow grades but quickly spike in value in XF/AU/MS.)

Apparently I thought this would be easier than it is.

Here's how it started... I've started integrating the counterfeits from Steve's site into the Coin Facts section here. If there are counterfeit images available I'm adding an icon to the main list. I thought while I was doing that, I could add key and semi-key icons also.

Trade dollar counterfeits are added and I started adding the key date info when I sorta figured out it wasn't so simple....

http://www.coincommunity.com/us_dollars/trade.asp

Maybe do one series at a time in a new topic, get everyone's opinions, then put together kind of an "average" key date list?

The problem with this request is it is too vague. What some may call keys, others may say just difficult to find. For example that list shown here on this post did not show the 72 Lincoln Cent Doubled Die but did show the 55. Why? Then too if we are to include error coins, such as the 55 Dbl, then what about all the other errors. Now do we also include the Copper 43 Cent? In Cents alone there are possibly errors from every year. Check with coppercoins.com and you'll see just how many error coins are listed for Cents alone.
With every coin there are such odd balls. Again an example is the Mercury dime 42/41, 42D/41. But now there to is the 45 Micro S and several other Micro S's have been found. Do we include all of these as a semi or key?
OR do you want a list of low mintage coins. Then too where would such a list start? With less than a million. Less than a hundred thousand? Less than one hundred? Again, such a list would so much depend on who you are, what you think, what you can afford, etc.
The question is just to vague.
This may be why not an easy thing to find on the internet. So much depends on what YOU think is a KEY or SEMI KEY date.

Dare I mention it, but the term 'Key' is tied to one's definition of 'complete set:'

Since the 1894-S Barber dime was NOT a production coin it can hardly be called a 'Key.'

Likewise:
1922 Plain Cent
1918/1917 Nickel
1942 over 1941 Dime
Catch the drift?

If a collector determines that he/she 'needs' a certain odd coin to make a complete set then that coin becomes a 'key,'
(But only for that collector.)

My dime set is complete - 74 regular issues. But never done.
Thank goodness Dansco did not provide a hole for the 94-S!

It was such a reasonable idea to identify a list of keys and semi-keys, but look how quickly
the difficulties arose?

---

The Grey Sheet lists prices for 'complete' sets but then
lists which coins are NOT included.
I follow that guide for myself.

PPS. And if we let Album Makers tell us what is needed then... where did I put the headache pills?

Are there defining factors for "key" and "semi-key"? Especially on ebay, it seems like many sellers are calling every CC Morgan a "key date!" or "semi-key date!" or "extremely rare!" This just an example of the ambiguity of the terms. Also, I just hate when sellers do this to a not-so-rare coin just to get less experienced people to bite on those words.

coinlover168,

Sadly, no.

Among the Barber dimes the 1895-O is, and has been, the traditional key date.
However, they always seem to be available, both on ebay and in established auction houses.
However, the examples are either very low grade or 'detail' graded.
I would say, to simplify the 'key' question of this date:

"1895-O - Lowest mintage, traditional key. Readily available in problem condition for a price.
Still retains 'Key' status in problem-free grades from good through AU."

Perhaps definitions of 'key, rare, etc." need to be included in the CCF Glossary.
If only potential buyers would READ the advice freely given here.
