I've been trying to think of what I wanted to do for my 1,000th post on the forum, and figured something would come up that would be worthy of such a milestone. My birthday was on Friday, and my fiancee's parents invited me to their house for a little impromptu birthday dinner tonight (I had other plans on Friday and went to a hockey game on Saturday night...that was my fiancee's present to me).

So, my fiancee's parents had placed a bag on the table and told me it was for me. Inside was a card welcoming me to the family, and a smaller bag too. In this smaller bag was an assortment of coins. I had 16 circulated silver Roosevelt dimes, two 90% silver 1964 Kennedy halves, a 1967 40% silver half, a 1972-D BU Eisenhower dollar in a Lucite ball, three uncirculated series 1976 $2 bills in sequential serial number order, a 1982-S 90% silver proof George Washington commemorative half dollar, a 1976-S 40% silver proof Bicentennial set, and a 1946 Booker T. Washington half dollar, which is the first classic commemorative half dollar I have ever had (well, okay, second, after my 1893 Columbian Exposition half). I think the Booker T. Washington half looks great for being loose in a bag like it was (though it is now in an airtite capsule). Photos are included for the Bicentennial set, Washington half, and Booker T. Washington half.

Needless to say, it was a surprise, and well-appreciated, and since this came from a collection my fiancee's grandfather had started before he died, I feel honored to have them as part of mine. Her father does not collect coins, but he kept these as a memory of his father, so I am very humbled that he trusts these pieces of it to me. Plus, now I want to make a date set of the classic commemorative half dollars!

Thanks for enduring this long read, and here's a milestone for me for my 1,000th post, and for my first classic commemorative half, and for my birthday!

Cool deal! Sounds like you have a great family, what I'm about to say isn't meant to hijack your thread, but I'm 33 and been engaged twice, broke it off once. Medically retired from the military from injuries... I tried leaving home because there was nothing here for me, and even less when I returned, my father killed himself while I was in, my brother and I do not get along, so I don't get to see my niece and nephew, I live with my mother, and she isn't allowed to see them either because she doesn't get along with him either, so I think she's seen her grandkids a handful of times and they're almost 4. I rarely get along with her, she just said she's thought of killing herself, then said she was j/k... Alsel of my old friends, have families now, so I started teaching myself how to make jewelry, I was a machinist in the navy.

So my point in all of that, is not sympathy (please don't, it's my life) but for you to be aware of just how lucky you are, my friend. I would take that as a huge hint as to what he thinks of you and thank you for sharing!

That's the kind of thing that truly makes you feel welcome to the family.

Similar experience for me. When my (now) in-laws got to know me they gave me a lot of old Thai coins and banknotes. They tend to keep them as good luck charms. That made me feel accepted and was honoured. I did replace a lot of them with alternative duplicates I had.

For such a
I would think you'ld offer to buy all the older members a coin as a gift to us. And since you just had a birthday, one more reason to celebrate with an offering to this forum.
Nice going.
Rest in Peace

Wow! Congrats! Happy birthday!

With a great gift like that, you just have to know how much that family loves you.

Be sure to note which coins came from that family so that you can pass them on someday to the next generation.
