Ex-UPS driver sentenced to eight months in jail for gold, silver thefts
http://www.redding.com/news/local/e...5220141.html

Quote:
A former United Parcel Service driver who stole shipments of gold and silver found himself fitted with steel handcuffs Wednesday as he was sentenced to eight months in Shasta County Jail and placed on formal probation for three years.

Kevin Christopher Peel, who would face more than eight years in prison if he violates his probation, was remanded into jail custody Wednesday after pleading no-contest in November to six felony counts of grand theft and a related enhancement.

According to the article, the driver stole $242,000 in gold and silver over a one year timespan. Eight months for theft on such a scale seems really light handed and should be much more. It is the wrong message to let someone steal a small fortune, almost get away with it and then when caught get such a short sentence.
Rest in Peace

Six felonies and only an eight month sentence.

He could end up serving only four months if he behaves himself in jail. Sheesh!

And this is why there is so much crime - no more "years at hard labor" breaking rocks in the sun make it much easier for people to give in to temptation.

I see this a lot, our local judges and prosecution
system is to easy on criminals.

The guy should have gotten years, right from the start.

How is he going to break probation?

Is he going back to work for UPS?

Or maybe the post office.

This is where my shipment went!
Just kidding.
But seriously, six felonies and only 8 months in prison?!
Who sentenced this guy, Mr. Kindness?
He probably won't even serve all eight months.
I wouldn't be surprised if he served less than six months.

Upstanding folks will pay for it one way or another. If not from the loss of our personal collections, then from our taxes for their 3 squares a day.

This guy will have a hard time finding another job with a felony on his record...which unfortunately makes it more likely that he'll steal again.

Not necessarily. In NY and many other states, employers who hire convicted felons are given tax credits for their business. Also, consider that there are many convicted criminals who have been given civil servise jobs; particularly so, in cases where some outside agency was paid with taxpayer dollars to perform a shoddy background check. Such was recently discovered to have been the case with the TSA.

This thread is a good example of how crime pays ... well over a hundred thousand dollars for a few months in jail.

According to the studies I have read, few criminals think they will be caught. If you do not expect any punishment, there is not a heck of a lot of difference between eight months and many years - you think getting caught is for the other guy. Also interestingly, white and blue collar criminals have the same basic attitude.
