I wanted to be able to see my coin collection from anywhere and was thinking of creating a website. I wanted to use free resources and wanted it to be hassle free to modify and update from anywhere. After looking at several options I settled on creating a blog on blogger and organized it as follows: http://coinnerdtypeset.blogspot.com/I would really appreciate your feedback and suggestions on making it better. It was pretty easy to set up - took me one evening, and most of that was taking photos. I am still terrible at taking coin pictures and I am still learning every day. I feel like this allows me to take my beloved type set wherever I go. And you can't beat free. Now if I could only take clear pictures that show accurate depictions of the coins' surfaces, I would be in heaven. Thanks in advance for your advice. P.S.: Some of my coins are in slabs and I am tortured about whether I should crack them to put in my type set holder. The home page holder has not been updated yet for some recently acquired coins and needs a cleaning badly. As for the website -- at first I thought that having a website showing off your collection was a foolish idea, but I see that you are not identified so that's good.
The photos look pretty good and it serves its purpose. You cam easily see your collection anytime you want.
If it is mainly for your private use, it's fine the way it is. Might even do that myself someday -- but like you posted, it's a lot of pictures to take!

Send Bobby an email and ask him to set up and account for you on CCF's image gallery. Its a great way to store pictures and you can customize your gallery by making folders to organize everything. The best part is that all you have to do to insert an image into a forum post is copy and paste a link. http://www.coincommunity.org/gallery/index.php

Thanks! Still trying to figure out a lot. Maintenance, security, photography, presentation aesthetics... You can only take on all this if you love it. I like the CCF gallery idea, but I think the Blogger interface is a littler cleaner - no ads and only the links that I put up. But somehow google is making money from me.

One suggestion.
Go to a store that specializes in cameras (if there are any left) or look on-line for canned air.
Canned air is used to blow of the camera parts when repairs are made or just for general upkeep.
You can use the canned air to blow off all the dust are other small debris that detracted from some of your photos.
But I do like where you are heading very much.

Advertising a coin collection, gun collection, stamps, etc. is not really the smartest thing to do now days. Although you may not think anyone would try to find you due to a web site, you really never know. I really think the safest place for a coin collection is not to advertise it anywhere.

Thanks carl. Although I may not have experienced as much as you have, I feel that I would rather not collect things I like if I had to live in fear of losing my collection all the time. Not being able to share my passion with others would be a deal breaker. Sure, I think everyone should be prudent, but I think hobbies are inherently social activities. We just have to be smart about it. This is why communities like CCF are so greatly appreciated. I do miss spending saturdays at the coin shop shooting the breeze with friends in person.

A very nice blog site and awesome photos. I do something similar to you, but my motivation is quite different.
I have my coin photos on Flickr (there is an iPhone app for it also). For myself, I use it to keep track of the coins that are of the highest quality that make up my Canadian circulated coin collection. I can then access them on my iPhone when I am at a coin show and compare them against what a seller has. This approach allows me to compare if a coin in my collection is worthy of an upgrade. I see most of the old timers with pen and paper lists.
My privacy settings are turned on, so nobody except myself can see the photos. I started by using a 1200 dpi scanner to create the pictures as this was quicker, than using a camera, and since my coins are in 2x2 holders easier to scan. Then using a image editor to cropped them out individually and organising them into folders by denomination. It took a couple of days on and off in my spare time to complete.
I can quickly replace a coin picture with a new upgraded coin picture and keep everything current. I found that going to coin shows and looking at coins for sale I have trouble remembering the coin grades in my collection. This makes it a lot easier with the visual reference right on my phone.
My $0.02 cents.

Hi jbuck. I dont mean to clutter with multiple threads. Thoght that the other thread was about building a better collection and this one was about online tools for presentation, but if you think merging these is a good idea, i'll be happy with you exercising your moderating wisdom. I'm not a techie, so I can't answer this one, but are you SURE you can't be tracked via IP address or some such? Nice collection! Any idea why no slots for Half Dimes?
