I will be bidding on some coins tomorrow at my first auction. It's a general auction, not coins only. Looks like there are lots containing Morgans, Barber halves, SLQs, buffalo nicks, walkers etc. Nothing uncommon, mainly bullion grade. Wish me luck! Good luck! Do you know if the auctions have a buyer's premium? I usually have that added cost in mind when I make bids (shipping for online auctions).

Keep us posted. Hope you get some good deals, but don't be disappointed if moon money shows up.

There is a premium and I have figured that into my Max bids. Thanks for reminding me!
I have a limit determined for each lot and I will happily walk away before the prices roll over me! I just hope there aren't deep pockets there with no knowledge of the values.
Will keep you posted. I'm looking forward to the action (I think)

Quote: I just hope there aren't deep pockets there with no knowledge of the values. It's actually not so much that as it is folks getting caught up in bidding "fever" and just having to "win".... Sounds like you're approaching this in the right frame of mind. Stick to your plan.

I've been reluctant to try the auction route since I haven't been very accurate at evaluating photos. I've missed "details" on BU dollar lots (cleaning, minor damage) that I've acquired on other forums. I would bid with this in mind - photos are not the same as having the coins in hand. Good luck and please post pics after you receive your purchases! I believe Dirty Harry also said "Make my day!".

My strategy has always been to examine 'in hand', what what lots I may be interested in at the view day(s). I them submit a single written price price bid if my interest remains, after viewing the lot. Generally speaking, I don't attend the actual auction. I have acquired many thousands of dollars worth of coins with such a strategy over the decades. Since my collection is relatively mature, the single written price bids are always quite low, and I expect to miss out. If I win, I almost always get a good value for money bargain. If I win that is a bonus, If I miss out that is a bonus too, because I get to keep my money. Satisfaction either way. Another bonus: I get to catch up with my numismatic friends, in a relaxed and friendly way, rather than under pressure on the auction day, when for most of the time, you have to shut up and be silent.

I do a lot of on line auctions, two houses are local as well. Be sure this is a premise only auction, if online bidding is allowed you may find a "friendly shill session" going on between auctioneer and "friends". Takes a bit but if auctioneer seems to favor on line or certain local bidders, pack up and go home. Ain't worth that hassle.

Back from the auction. There were a few contingency bids from absent bidders that were surpassed quickly. One fellow was keen to purchase all coin lots and overbid on nearly every one (in my opinion). He paid $8 or $9 each for circulated common date Mercury and Roosevelt dimes, $2.50 for well-worn buffaloes, and $27 each for 5 common Morgans. Rounding out his haul were five SLQs at $20 each and ten Barber dimes at $10 each. I was in on the Morgan bidding until it hit $22, but bailed after that. But I was able to get one of the lots. Ten Barber halves at $10 each. These bring my total barber half count to eleven. They are well circulated, but I was happy to get them. Will post a picture of the group later.

Both sorry and glad for your loss. - Sorry you missed out on the coins. - Glad you didn't get caught up and spend above a price that you were willing to pay. But glad for getting the Barber halves you wanted.
