this 1950 or 58 Double die obverse is a clear double die however the final year of the date looks like a capital Q any opinions or experience ,any input would be gratefully appreciated.

@SG, first welcome to CCF. Second, I don't see a pic of the date (if you have different pics with the same filename, then the site will just overwrite the old one). Please choose a different name and add the other pic to this thread. Thx!

From what I can see of IGWT, there is a crescent shaped groove that pretty much follows the rim. This is a common form of damage, perhaps caused by a wrapping machine.

Hello and

We will need pictures of LIBERTY and the date, but from what images you provided, it looks to be heavy Die Deterioration. Happy hunting!

i uploaded the date but something got lost somewhere so ill post the last 2 digits of the date of the 1950 or 58 penny as any normal puctures are shot way above their accepted reslolutions (this is understandably my error not the forums as theres no need for extreme resolution here..) please forgive my error and what I'm uploading is the last 2 digits of the coin date.

im having difficulty fitting the resolution requirements I'm going to set my camera at 300x300 and take an obverse and reverse image so your not looking at tiny portions..i dont see any way to revise my post so look at following posts for the images..in regards to the member that stated deterioration ,could explain what this is?know that I'm being sincere,i see a clear double mark as the two are not aligned ,however I'm here to learn.bottom line is there any way to prove the coins date? is it something worth having it proven and authenticated.i have so many pennys that are key DDO error dates and have even used an image onion screen program to line up what I thought was doubling to a image captured from a website verified by PCGS and using 50% opacity everything lines up flawlessly.this penny and a few others are an enigma to me and if this isn't double die and more wear I'm open to being educated as to know before verification can save me time and money.

Die Deterioration is what happens when the die that is striking a coin has been used up, and is worn down. The wear on the Die shows up on the coin as (sometimes) doubling, usually raised, but can be incuse. I'll give you a link to look at on DDD ( Die Deterioration Doubling). This doubling adds no extra value to your coin. One more link I'll give you is on other forms of (worthless) doubling. Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions feel free to ask. happy hunting!

Ok yes based on your pic of the date, that looks like a well-placed gouge on the final digit (a zero I think). At least so far, I'd save your money and not bother with getting this coin slabbed. Here is a link to the free CCF photo optimizer as it may help you with your pics in the future:

Above the motto is showing die wear, not a doubled die.

Wheat cents in the 50's were way over used. Not a doubled die.

thankyou for all the good detailed explanations,as you can imagine theres alot of closed web pages that say this coin sold here for x amount and this newly discovered error is estimated to be minted before catching in the low 10 thousands..all very confusing.however I take what I'm explained and shown better in an open community like this site as there are living people to actually pose questions to,please bear with me as I really want to get back the basics or the books and I'm hoping someone can help ,certainly theres an apex that decides what is and has to be the final authority in coin grading ,as well as types of errors and what seperates one from another,as well as overdates etc..we used to use a book, with computers there were books we turned to especially with the advent of hyper text transfer protocol and all things related ,long story short so I dont keep reasking the same questions ..would anyone know who or at least a link to the current agency or association that sets the status quo for the coin grading companies, and such and so on..its only I clearly need a refresher.doing so would enable me to get the most out of this community ,certainly there may be two opposing governing agencies a link to one or both would be appreciated.till then are we in agreement that the pictures included are of the recent 2018 Lincoln Shield cent and to my knowledge is an accepted DDO? and I included a reverse double die of a 63 Roosevelt dime, and a potential 42 over 41 Mercury dime..please I invite any insights ,advice as I need to get eyes and opinions that can only be achieved by the internet as I always feel something may be seen that I missed and I may mistake what I see as something when its something else please ,and thankyou in advance.
