I know there are not absolutes but if I go to ebay through the link on the CCF page, am I likely to get an "honest" coin at a "honest" price? *** Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by mrulon 08/30/2019 2:32 pm

That gives you the ebay listings of all CCF members. I would like to think that CCF members are above average in terms of honesty and understanding the value of coins. Certainly my experience with 2 members was entirely satisfactory. But I have to be realistic and say that being a CCF member is no guarantee of anything. You still have to do your due diligence and look at someone's ebay record. That being said, ebay itself provides buyers quite a bit of protection.

These are my guide lines on buying on ebay: Coins over $100 will be purchased in a slab by NGC or PCGS. Use realized sales to get the value of a coin: coin facts, ebay sold, coin explorer, Heritage, etc. Stick to sellers who offer refunds, solid ratings, quality photos and stay away from new and none USA sellers. Coins over 1K buy from major dealer or at auction from GC, Heritage etc.

Find a local gold & silver buyer, if they don't have a regular buyer, you may find some good coins. I purchased a lot of BU & AU bullion for spot.

I've been buying and selling on ebay for over 20 years. Just do your research and use common sense. Yes there are scammers out there, but most sellers are legit.

I use ebay quite a bit, in fact for well over ten years. In that time I have not once been ripped off as far as not getting what I paid for. Disappointed in a few, yes. There two rules I adhere to without hesitation no matter how good the coin or deal appears to be. One, I base the grade on the listings photographs to that of my photo-grade book and coin specific volumes which I have. Second, I have never purchased a coin at the average of what grade it is. For example, if photo-grades at an extra fine I bid at the price of a fine or very-fine and no higher. These have been the primary reasons for my success with purchasing raw coins. Comparing them against graded specimens ensures authenticity followed by their weight as I receive them. As for graded coins, I still try to stay under the average cost for the grade, verifying the number with PCGS or NGC. As far as that goes, my only disappoint was an NGC PF66 Kennedy half which had milk spots when I received it. The photo on the listing did not show them. But I sold it a few years later for a small profit. ebay seems to get hit with negativity quite often, which they should pertaining to an increase of counterfeits, however it's ultimately the buyer who is to blame. Know what you're buying and know what it costs. An uneducated buyer will get burnt almost every time.

If you mean the ebay link on the left side of the page under CCF Partners, no that doesn't give you any additional protection over just going to ebay directly. All the Partners link does is give CCF a small payment from ebay for the referral. You are just as likely to get a good deal or a scam going to ebay through the link as you are going to ebay directly. If you mean the Member ebay Sales link, then yes you are probably a little safer

ebay is perfectly safe to buy from and the overwhelming majority of listings are honest. There's actually more risk selling than buying on ebay. That said if you avoid things that are to good to be true such as what looks like a windfall profit, don't just always necessarily get the cheapest thinking it's the best deal, avoid raw coins of value, and avoid sellers from China (or international sellers entirely while being new) you will eliminate the overwhelming majority of bad listings.

I don't use ebay. Its just not a place I think the average deal is good. Unless you know the prices a lot I see on ebay (especially Buy It Now) are at inflated prices. For me the best prices I found are local coin shops. I found another website (but you can't post it on here) that I've gotten some good coins at good prices. I also found a dealer in Indiana that has all the key date coins that I can't find locally and they always are willing to negotiate prices. So for me its locally first. I have a friend that also collects and I also get from him, but he sells me his rejects (not that they are bad, but they aren't MS60+ and I don't generally buy MS60+ ;) )

I look on ebay everyday for coins. A few things: For junk silver, I buy from trusted sellers like APMEX when I get a coupon that works or extra ebay bucks. I only buy my numismatic coins (PCGS graded) when I can verify the number on the PCGS website. I'm not spending thousands of dollars, so the odds of someone making a great fake slab for a $100 coin aren't that high. Many times, normal retailers list on ebay, so I always look up the ebay seller on google to see if they have a website, and 95% of the time it's cheaper to buy from them directly, so I do that.

Lately I have been buying almost exclusively on ebay. I find there is better selection and usually better prices (in low starting bid auctions) even after shipping than what I can get from a coin dealer or show. I have been disappointed as of late going to some LCS's and asking for items I would expect them to have but they don't.

I have bought complete sets of proof coins 1955-2017, silver proof sets from 1992-2017, mint sets 1959-2017 as well as many uncirculated coins from 1943-1958 through ebay sellers and a local coin shop. I have had no issues with the local shop, and only three lost orders ordering from ebay sellers. The most recent years 2018 and 2019 have come from the Mint. When I was last in the hobby in the 1970s and early 1980s, the local shop was the best alternative. The world has changed, for the better in this case.
