What a great show it was at the coin show today! We moved to a Fire Hall this year and the parking lot was packed all day. Best show we ever had! I've been looking at this coin for a couple years and figured I might as well. It joins my non assembled US Type Coin set. Still have lots of holes on the earliest dates which I may never own but this type coin fits in nicely. (It looks better than these pictures) 1866 Rays Shield Nickel

Sweet pick-up @TNG! What are you thinking of with regard to the grade?

That's a fantastic example. Is it raw or slabbed? It looks to be mid 60's

Thanks buds!
It was just graded AU+ on the 2x2. I bought the coin, not the holder. Obverse is well struck but has numerous small pitting, particularly at the bottom quarter portion. Maybe just from the condition of the planchet quality. Maybe the blank was rough? Reverse looks MS to me. (This is a first year "nickel" so who knows?) But held in hand, it looks very nice and fairly spot free but not cleaned. No unsightly black spots which is one of my pet peeves. Higher grade 1866 nickels don't grow on trees and it also completes my nickel type set with a complimentary appearance.

Yeah, I could see the pitting taking away from the grade but it's a beautiful coin, non the less. I'm not overly familiar with the shields but have always liked them. I have a few scrubs from coin lots I have bought, so yours is fantastic looking in comparison. Congrats on your acquisition!

Very nice! Any die cracks? Both my Shield nickels have large die cracks.

It has to do with your not allowing 3rd party cookies on CCF. Here, I have uploaded the picture a different way again. Click to enlarge.

Nice addition. A little back story, the obverse was referred to as the tombstone nickel for it's appearance of a wreath draped grave marker. The rays of the reverse were removed since the public associated it to the Confederacy, bars and stars.
