We are all guilty of this. We all buy coins only because they are beautiful, not because we need them in our collection.

In my case, it seems these less expensive coin purchases are scratching the itch when I cannot afford the coins on my list.

To borrow and slightly modify a classic Clint Eastwood movie line.... "Need's got nothing to do with it."

Now that 2022 had started, and I've entered (most of) my 2021 purchases into Numista, I can try to summarize my goals again...

1) Get some more missing dates for my OFEY
1a) In particular, fill in the remaining post-1720 holes (2022, 1844, 1781, 1756, 1755, 1729, 1727, 1723, 1722)
1b) Try to fill in the other post-1700 gaps as well (1719, 1716, 1714, 1712, 1711, 1709, 1708, 1705, 1702, 1701, 1700)
1c) If possible, try to get an unbroken line even further back (good luck, it gets really bad past 1700)
1d) Take some pics of the more recent dates for How Far Back Can We Go 7th edition... older dates too if it has time to get that far

2) Related to the above: get some (more?) dated Islamic coins from the 15th century AD
2a) Non-Islamic dated (and/or single-year-type) coins from the 15th century AD would be welcome, but unlikely to fit within my budget
2b) Dated coins from before the 15th century are useful as well, though I already have a bunch of those

3) Get to 400 issuers on Numista (currently 393)
3a) Extension: get to 400 issuers without notgeld (currently 374)
3b) If possible, also get to 250 countries (currently 240)

4) Get to 400 banknote issuers on Numista (currently 266)
4a) Alternate version: get to 200 banknote issuers without notgeld (currently 135, I think; I have a lot of notgeld)
4b) Also get to 150 banknote countries (currently 119)

5) Fill some of the remaining holes in my Dansco 7070 album
5a) In particular, get at least one more classic commemorative, and/or at least one more Seated Liberty silver
5b) If it shows up within my budget, get an Arrows & Rays quarter and/or half dollar, even though the 7070 doesn't have holes for them
5c) In theory, same for a CC mint coin (any denomination), but that's a long shot

6) Get at least one more coin for my Romanian type set attempt (...also figure out what exactly I still don't have)
6a) If I can find some Mongolian coins I didn't have yet, that would be cool as well
6b) Same applies to Icelandic and Israeli coins... I forgot what other countries I'm trying to do a type set for. Belgium?

7) Formalize my USSR non-commemorative type set progress, figure out what (if anything) I'm still missing, and get it (...discounting the gold, which is out of my budget, and probably never circulated anyway)
7a) If that turns out to be easier than expected, try the (base metal) commemoratives too

8) Formalize my Russian Empire AE type set, and fill at least some of the holes
8a) Some more of the silvers would be nice as well (AFAIK there are too many rare ones to do any type set work)

9) Formalize my 18th/19th century Swedish AE type set attempt, and fill at least some of the holes
9a) If my brief interest into those coins shows up again in 2022, do something similar with 19th and/or 20th century Portuguese coins

10) If prices manage to get back into a reasonable range, finally get a gold coin
10a) If I find any platinum within my budget, get that too
10b) Can I manage a non-MT thaler?

11) Add some more ancient coins to my collection, especially in areas where I'm still lacking
11a) Add at least one more of the first 17 Roman emperors (Julius Caesar to Marcus Aurelius)
11b) Add at least one more 5th century Roman emperor and/or empress (I already have most of the common ones so this will be hard)
11c) Finally get a 6th century BC coin

12) Get a coin from each decade up to 1500 (currently missing: 1680s, 1600s?, 1580s, 1540s, 1500s)
12a) Also figure out which decades I'm missing in the 15th and 14th centuries, and fix the gaps if possible

...there are probably others I couldn't think of at the moment, but I turned out to have a lot less time to write those than I expected, and the next one will be 13 anyway and I'm not sure I'm willing to end there. But if I'll think of some more I'll try to add them later.

(Crossed-out entries had been fulfilled in my first coin-buying expedition of 2022. The country and issuer counts do not include those purchases; they would probably change when I enter those into Numista, and I'm considering editing the new figures into this post at that time.)

Update my Innovation dollar CAPS album. (I've been slacking and just picked up the 2020 and 2021 P&Ds, so once they come in.)

Get some of the W quarters.

Work on my ASE set.

Simple and manageable goals.
Rest in Peace

Sorry for those of us who are not American, please enlighten us to what a Dansco 7070 album is.

I notice it is referred to a lot by Americans.

Dansco created an album code 7070 which is called US Type Set. It is a place to store the major types of each coin released by the US Mint. It covers most coins released from the 1800's till the 20th century. It's missing a few coins as it tries to keep the set affordable (which it does for most but a few coins in MS are over $$$$).

I am doing the 7070 registry set but it has a few differences (like more modern coins and no 50 cent commemoratives), many people just do the Dansco album. If you would like to see the coins on the registry set click on the link in my signature.

...which it somewhat fails at because the Seated dollars (and to a lesser extent the Trade dollars) are worth $$$ in any grade, and the Classic Head cents are worth $$$ in anything resembling high grade. OTOH I do have to admit that excluding them would probably have looked even weirder.
(I probably won't be getting a Trade dollar for my album, because they're so much faked that buying unslabbed is a giant risk, and buying slabbed means I couldn't put it into the album. Seated dollars... hard to say. Not a short-term problem in any case because they're still far above my budget. Classic Head cents are fortunately very cheap in low grades.)

Also seriously what's up with including VDB cents as their own type? They should have included the Arrows & Rays types instead.

Hole inclusion and exclusion often seem to be driven driven by popularity as much as anything else.

Thanks hfjacinto - a good explanation and sounds like a great product for those of you who do not have the money for stuff like 1793 chain cents and 1797 Heraldic Bust eagle silver coins!

Put two and two together when Utuba Silverpicker does videos on his US type set album and that was this album you mention.

PS Had a look at your collection on it, really nice coins, love the 1832 Capped Bust Half and all of your early quarters!

Thanks @princetane!

I also have the full type set but that one will never get finished.

https://www.NGCcoin.com/registry/co...sets/369022/

The full set has coins that are beyond my budget.

For cheap and actually not too expensive the 20th century was easy. The most expensive coin was the 1921 Peace dollar.
