As the title states. After having referenced CC,VV,Wexler, tried my best to ingest the areas of my quarry, the hunt begins. There are some nice doubled dies up in here. I am not a LSC fan. But this year seems worth a look.
I am just asking how long the experienced searcher familiar with the various varieties. How long to scrutinize 8 Rolls?
Happy hunting!

Just an added note, looking for errors, rotated dies, clashes, FFD, Cuds. How long does it take you vets to ascertain all of these variables per coin?

I'd say 20-30 seconds tops to decide whether a coin should be set aside for further review.

1 penny from a BU ROLL of any certain date takes me 7 to 10 seconds.
DESIGN VARIETIES or OFF METAL errors will require research and be committed to memory.

if you only search certain areas of a coin because of the date, you may miss out on a NEW DISCOVERY.

the most years between mintage and me finding a new discovery is 40 years.

so, I am sure there are some varieties that have yet to be discovered.
and so, I recommend searching the entire coin.

good luck on future finds

Modern coins single squeeze doubled dies for the most part are so subtle that they rarely garner any attention. (Exception being the 1995) But searching new cents does give you the best chance at finding a discovery piece. Although I prefer searching pre 1973 solid date BU rolls.

Typically 15-20 seconds. If something catches my eye, maybe up to 30 while inspecting it closer.

An 10x magnifier an an eye catch differences. First step. Then depending for what you look more or less time.

@Early. You can catch fast those, no doubt. Nobody can replace years and experience with some photos or articles. BUT: In one month I will finish the study of the design varieties on Kennedy halves (my most love design), and give to you to see. I bet will take more then 30 min. (I joke) I will send you the studies, me or Miguel.

I just take my time and enjoy the ride. I don't bother to use magnification approaching the sub atomic level.

I think that this is a good question but in my opinion, there are a lot of factors. Some depend on the person in general, your comfort level with the type of coin you are presently searching, how you search and your level of knowledge, for all you are searching.

Going back to my very first factor, I think different folks pick up on different things, at different paces and depending on who is guiding you, that can also vary. I occasionally search BU rolls but for the most part, search bank rolls, which I think will teach you more and are more cost effective than any other type of searching. Many of my mentor's search only BU coins or pick auctions but I have not reached that level yet and still really love searching bank rolls, have done it for years, don't know if that will ever change for me.

Back to your original question, as for time on each coin, I know folks that use loupes and spend about 4 seconds per coin, that's both sides. I tried the loupe and cannot do it. I search with a scope on my laptop and take about the same time levelsofmadnes does. I search varieties, clashes, trail dies and anything else that stands out. As time goes on, you will recognize many of these without even thinking about it.

At the end of the day, when you have searched a roll or several and are not comfortable with what you have done and the time you have taken doing it, go back and do it again. In my opinion, it's a comfort level that you are happy with and that may change, from time to time. Have fun doing it though, or quit.

Agree with MAKE. The difference it is YOU have to put your standard of what you look for. One day could be very good and 5 others not. Important is your goal and what standard you ask. If you just begin, do not try to jump very fast or to high. Hope you come with nice topics here, we wait you.

For a modern BU roll most of the doubled dies will be pretty subtle. For 2014 you have DDO-001 which you likely won't miss, and DDO-003 that has a die chip in the 4 so again, knowing to look for that you won't miss it. All the others are pretty light. So, best way to see the extra thickness is to look at them quickly one after another and note any that seem off. For this I just set them all out, five rows of ten coins, and scan then with a loupe (note I use a headlamp as a light source so no need to pick up the coins one by one as the light moves as I move). Once set out it takes maybe 90 seconds to scan them all, unless of course odd stuff is showing up. For 2014 you just look at the RTY and date for thickness, then a quick whirl of the loupe over the rest of the coin to see any trail dies or other stuff. It's fast, and I doubt I miss much since looking at one set of RTY after another is a great way to notice when one is thicker than the others.

All three sides takes me less than 10 seconds per coin.

Any longer than that, you will find Machine Doubling, and will waste more time with that.

1. Machine Doubling will be on the outside/inside edges of devices.

2. DDD that will be on the fields (not on the devices) towards the closest rims.

Thanks to all for your insights. I am not to far of base and tend to fall in that comfort zone. I familiarize myself with the known varieties for that year then check those areas then do a quick look for any abnormalities.
I probably spent about 15 to 20 seconds per. If something catches my eye, I stash it in the question mark tube for later and keep on looking.
Again, thanks to all for the info. This is something I suppose all do a little different, not like putting your pants on so to speak.
